Ireland - NAMA legislation expected by July

Mon, May 25, 2009

Speaking on The Week in Politics programme on RTE last night, Brian Lenihan said legislation on the National Assets Management Agency is expected to be finalised before the end of July.

The Minister for Finance has said the Dáil will, if necessary, be re-called over the summer to pass the legislation establishing NAMA.

Minister Lenihan's comments came ahead of today's deadline for those banks and building societies covered by the State guarantee to provide detailed breakdowns of their property and development loan portfolios to the National Treasury Management Agency officials working on the NAMA project.

The Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan also said that the Anglo's losses were "somewhat beyond expectations". Anglo's results for the six months to March 2009 are expected on Thursday this week. Media speculation suggests an impairment write-down between €3.5 billion and €4 billion, which would be the biggest corporate loss Irish business history.
