Hugh Friel, Chairman of Tourism Ireland and ex-Chief Executive of Kerry Group, was the keynote speaker at the launch of a new book on corporate strategy on Wednesday last (20th May 2009) which took place at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. Among the 100 or more guests at the launch were the Attorney General, Paul Gallagher SC, and Judge Kevin McHugh of the District Court.
Describing 'Corporate Strategy for Irish Companies' as "clear and giving much need practical advice to Irish business managers", Mr Friel compared the new book to Good to Great by Jim Collins, a seminal text on leadership and strategy. He cited the PPARS debacle as an instance in which Ireland would have benefited from better planning and management.
Written specifically for Irish students and equally relevant and useful to business people, this comprehensive Irish text covers a broad range of material on managing organisations from a strategic perspective, as well as discussing important wider issues, such as leadership, corporate governance and ethics, as the foundation stones of effective business strategy.
According to author, Gerry Gallagher, "'Corporate Strategy for Irish Companies' is written in a very accessible style, making it ideal for business managers to help them focus on the strategic, rather than the operational issues facing their organisation." It is written from an Irish perspective and contains up-to-date case examples from a wide variety of Irish companies in addition to well-known multinational corporations, and is the only book of its kind available in Ireland.
The Author: Gerry Gallagher lectures in corporate strategy at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. Gerry is a former Army officer with experience in operational units, Army Headquarters and on active service with the United Nations.
