Chartered Accountants Tax News - 19th October 2009

Mon, Oct 19, 2009

Both Revenue and HMRC are warning again this week about fraudulent emails. The general principle that, if something is too good to be true, then it is not true, always applies. Fraudulent emails, ostensibly from Revenue, are telling recipients that they are eligible to receive a tax refund of €320.50 as a lever for obtaining personal information such as date of birth and bank account details.

The fraudulent emails, known as 'phishing', also contain a link to a reproduction of the Revenue website which perhaps may convince recipients of its validity. Anyone who has provided bank details in response to such emails should contact should contact their bank immediately.

The Revenue Commissioners advise that they never send emails which require customers to send personal information via email or pop-up windows.

Similarly, as reported in tax eNews, the UK HMRC have warned of scam emails advising recipients of tax refunds due and then requesting personal information.

Revenue has published a security warning on their website which can be accessed here
