In order to avoid penalties, self assessment tax returns for 2008-09 must be filed online by 31 January 2010. As readers of eNews are aware, the deadline for filing paper returns was 31 October 2009. Taxpayers who submit a paper return after 31 October 2009 or who file online after 31 January 2010 could receive a £100 penalty. In addition 31 January 2010 is also the deadline for paying any tax due for the 2008-09 tax year.
Individuals who are new to online filing will need to register for HMRC's Self Assessment Online service by visiting the HMRC website here.
Once registered, an Activation Code will be sent in the post and as this may take up to seven days for this to arrive, it is advisable to register as soon as possible.
