Chartered Accountants Tax News - 18th January 2010

Mon, Jan 18, 2010

Readers are reminded that the deadline for filing self assessment tax returns for 2008-09 online is 31 January 2010. Taxpayers who file online after 31 January 2010 could receive a penalty of £100.

31 January 2010 is also the deadline for paying any tax due for the 2008-09 tax year regardless of whether a return is filed on line or a paper return was filed. As readers of eNews are aware, the deadline for filing paper returns was 31 October 2009.

Individuals who are new to online filing will need to register for HMRC's Self Assessment Online service by visiting the HMRC website here. Once registered, an Activation Code will be sent in the post and as this may take up to seven days for this to arrive, it is advisable to register as soon as possible.

Help is available from self assessment section of the HMRC website which is available here
