HMRC has issued a reminder about the change in time limits for tax refund claims. The limits have changed from six years to four. Consequently certain individuals with claims to make must do now or risk loosing their right to a refund.
Agents with Self Assessment clients who have claims for the year 2004/05 must submit the claims before 31 March 2010. Claims for the 2005/06 tax year must be made by 5 April 2010. For individuals not within the self assessment system, mainly PAYE taxpayers, the 31 January 2011 deadline for making claims regarding the 2004/05 tax year has already passed. PAYE taxpayers and other taxpayers outside the Self Assessment system have until 31 January 2012 to make claims in respect of the 2005/06 tax year.
Further details, including a list of relevant deadlines is available here.
