A Professional’s Guide to Understanding Stress and Depression
by Dr Claire Hayes
Free to download
This short guide, which is available here to download free of charge, is intended to help you understand the nature of stress and depression so that you can be more informed and better able to promote mental health and wellbeing in your practice, your workplace and in yourself. Presented in a ‘question and answer’ format, it focuses on two key areas:
1. the nature of stress and depression and how they can impact on you individually, on your clients and on your colleagues;
2. the supports that are available for individuals, employers and employees.
Questions asked and answered include:
- What is stress?
- What is depression?
- Does it make sense for a Chartered Accountant to experience stress?
- What can you do to stop stress from spiralling into depression?
- How can depression be treated?
- How can you recognise when you need support?
- How can you recognise if your clients or colleagues are experiencing stress and/or depression, and what can you do?
In writing this guide, Dr Claire Hayes has drawn on her experience as a clinical psychologist, her work with people in organisations and her experience as Clinical Director of Aware. Claire’s particular interest in cognitive behavioural (CBT) approaches to coping is reflected in this guide; she shares two straight-forward methods for dealing with stress and depression: ‘The Coping Triangle’ and ‘The Coping Sentence’.
