In terms of Brexit what do you think is the biggest threat to Ireland?
In my opinion, Brexit is bad for Ireland. It was said before the vote on 23 June 2016 and I am consistent in that view. The level of commercial, trade, political and cultural ties between Ireland and the UK are huge and their departure from Europe is a significant loss. I think the sector that is most exposed is agri-food and that is where the biggest commercial threat lies. I would say that the preparation and response of the Irish Government and its agencies (Bord Bia, in particular, stands out) has been first class. I think the arms of the state are responding to the threat with everything in their arsenal.
How has your business changed since last June, after the Brexit vote?
The firm and me, personally, have been extensively engaging with clients across all sectors on their Brexit agenda. Every time we sit down with a new client we learn something new and discover another previously unconsidered angle to this. Turning over those rocks sometimes uncovers opportunities, as well as threats. In my experience in business and in PwC, our clients and the Irish economy, in general, are remarkably agile and resilient. We will figure this out.
Overall, we see businesses continuing to focus on growth. We have an ambitious growth strategy and our focus is to help our clients with sustainable business models that are fit for the future while managing a more volatile economic environment.
What are your goals for the next five years, professionally?
As Brexit Leader, it is my role to drive the PwC Brexit Task Force, whose objectives are to give market leading advice on dealing with the current uncertainties. This includes keeping a close eye on the rapidly changing business landscape to proactively provide up-to-the-minute advice to our clients so that their businesses remain sustainable into the future. As a member of the Irish territory's Leadership Team, I have a responsibility, along with my colleagues, to ensure that we continue to grow our business on the solid foundation of bringing value to our clients and our People.
What has been the most important moment in your career?
Making Partner in 2011.
What are your goals for the next five years, personally?
Keep my wife and two kids happy. If they are happy, I am happy. I have a very supportive family who permit me to go out every day and do a job that, while demanding, is one I love doing.
