Below is the competency statement for 2017/18 and a document highlighting any significant changes in this document from versions in previous years. This is the shared document between the education delivery and examination departments. Please note that if it is listed in the competency statement, it is examinable in the summer/autumn exams. Our materials are prepared each year to the guidance of the competency statement.

Underneath those are two documents to help you with answering exam questions:

The first is the Lexicon; a useful document that explains what is being asked -- it contains a list of commonly used verbs/instructions with their meaning. Students sometimes lose marks in the exam because they do not answer the question that is asked; so make sure you know the difference between an outline and a plan, and also if you have been asked to draft a memo or an email.

The Summer 2017 PEC report is the second valuable document, as it contains the summer paper from 2017 with suggested solutions and examiner comments. Use these notes to your advantage as it may highlight what aspect of a question was answered well and give insight and guidance in how you could improve your own answers.

Next in the list is document outlining how the CA Diary works; this is ...

Finally, please note that there is a support service for all members of the Institute (including student members).

Learning Journal 201718

The Learning Journal is the layout or planning and delivery of each subject in the course. Each session's material has the accompanying learning journal extract; but we have put it all here in one place if you would rather have it all up front. It is split up into each subject so you only need to print the sections that are relevant to you.

Use the learning journal to prepare for your classes; each session outlines the learning objectives and indicates the work/reading/questions to be done in preparation for the class. It also highlights the recordings available - use these to catch up on, or revise specific sections of the course. The references to the competency statement ensure that the subject material maps back to the examinable areas of the course, and past exam questions or examples from the books are also listed for you to do some self-guided study after class. The lecturer tips could come in handy too!

Additional subject materials and past papers

Below we have provided the first six sessions' worth of material per subject; this is to ensure that everyone has access to the notes needed, even if their enrolment process is ongoing.

The additional materials for certain subject areas - like the MA Toolkit and Tax reference materials - can also be found under these essential documents.

As well as this, the past papers can be found here. We have the papers from 2011-2016 available for each subject. Please be aware that the Tax papers for ROI and NI are updated each year for teaching purposes, so the papers from 2011-2016 are included in those files. For the other subjects, from 2011-2014 the papers and solutions were available as separate documents - these are in zip files under each subject header - but in 2015 and 2016 the PEC Reports combined the papers, solutions and examiner comments in one document, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

The 2017 papers will be used in the exam prep sessions towards the end of the year, and are not available yet.
