31 October 2021 is the self-assessment paper filing deadline for 2020/21 to avoid penalties.
Readers are reminded that if an online return cannot be filed by virtue of one of the online filing exclusions (this link is to the most recent version of these exclusions) meaning the return must be filed on paper instead, then in those cases, the 2020/21 paper filing deadline is extended to 31 January 2022. A reasonable excuse claim should accompany such returns.
HMRC may still accept COVID-19 as being a reasonable excuse when appealing late filing penalties. The guidance on this should be consulted before filing an appeal for reasonable excuse.
HMRC has recently issued a reminder to Self-Assessment taxpayers to check they have the correct information in order to complete their tax return.
