Chartered Careers Team: Accountancy Market Review

Oct 01, 2018

In general the accountancy and finance job market in Ireland is currently strong. We have experienced robust recruitment activity across all sectors including consistent demand across large and small practices and the financial services sector has benefited from developments with Brexit.

As a consequence of a strong market, salaries have lifted slightly over the last 12 months with better benefits and bonuses being offered.

Industry has also seen good growth across SME’s,Multinationals and PLCs. All sectors are performing well as Ireland experiences its’ lowest rate of unemployment in several years.

Some of the sectors seeing high demand for ACAs and FCAs include healthcare, technology, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, hospitality, property/construction and banking.

Additionally, skills sets that are being sought after include internal audit, risk and compliance, financial planning and analysis, commercial accounting as well as statutory accounting.

As general ledger and financial accountants remain consistently in demand we are seeing a definite surge in appetite for Commercial Financial Analysts and Finance Business Partners, although statutory financial accountants and senior financial accountants are in good demand also at the moment.

Some in-demand skill sets include strong analytical acumen, excellent communication skills, ERP experience and a broad commercial & business track record.

Senior level recruitment

We have also experienced an increase in recruitment activity for very senior managerial positions including roles at Financial Controller, Finance Director, CFO level as well as good opportunities arising at senior financial accountant level.

Auditors are still continually in demand at all levels across practice particularly in the Top 10 and Big 4 firms as they prepare for busy Q1 Audit season.

Tax continues to be an in demand skillset across all sectors including practice, industry and financial services.

Brexit has led to an increase in the number of senior positions within financial services particularly in the banking sector as many international banks look to put down a footprint in Ireland.

Dublin remains the main location for most accelerated career options but we have noted the regions and other provinces outside of Leinster improving in activity with increased options in Belfast, Cork, Limerick and Galway. Leinster also has seen an increase in activity in options outside of Dublin city.

The key challenge for employers currently is being agile and speedy enough to get the best people for their vacancies. During the summer of 2018 recruitment process themselves where a little slow but facing into the final quarter of 2018 employers are starting to move faster.

Members returning home from Australia currently have good options in the market and we are currently seeing many members check in with the Chartered Accountants Ireland careers team first in advance of returning to Irish shores.

In summary, the market is strong at the moment as we face into Q4 2018 with good options for Chartered Accountants at all levels. It is certainly reassuring to see executive and C level opportunities coming back online. However, it is important to note that the further you move up in terms of salary and package the more challenging it becomes to source roles and to secure interviews. The Career Coaching and Recruitment team in Chartered Accountants Ireland are here to support you through this process with one to one coaching, interview support as well as tips and advice.
