2015 was a critical year for Marian Galvin. She was approaching the end of her training contract with PwC and had a tough decision to make – whether to remain in practice or make a move into industry.

“I suppose I always saw myself going into industry at some stage,” Marian recalls. “I think it’s the same for most accountants in training. When I was working with the audit team, I got exposure to many industry sectors and that’s probably what made me choose that path.”

She applied for a finance analyst role with pharmaceutical firm J&J and knew straight away she had made the right choice. “I liked the culture and the atmosphere I experienced when I went for the interview,” she says.

She started work in J&J in May 2015. “Suddenly my world was filled with inventory reporting, quarter closes, process improvements and business partnering,” she notes. “The onboarding and support I got from the very outset were second to none. I had the opportunity very early on to report on my work and that gave me exposure to senior leadership. In early 2017, I rotated to work on a high-profile project and my world broadened once again – agile project methodology and process automation technologies became the order of the day.”

J&J’s commitment to talent development has been very important. “This is one of J&J’s core principles,” says Marian. “Over the past four years, my professional development has benefited from several J&J leadership courses, on the job coaching and peer-to-peer support. Many of the senior finance team members I work with have built their careers with J&J, working in a variety of roles. Seeing a career progression path is a key motivator for me.”

Values matter, as well. “The patient and our credo – our mission statement – are always at the centre of what we do,” she points out. “They bring in patients to meet us from time-to-time. I only play a tiny part in it, but I get a huge sense of satisfaction from knowing we are improving people’s quality of life.”

Today, Marian leads a global team of six people. “The career development opportunities have been great,” she says. “I have been given responsibility for a global team and have been able to take huge steps along the leadership journey very early in my career. I relish the opportunity of working in a global organisation like J&J. I connect with people worldwide daily and have travelled to some pretty cool places I would have never had the chance to see if I didn’t work for J&J.
