Autumn Budget cancelled

Nov 04, 2019

The 2019 Autumn Budget which was due to take place this Wednesday 6 November has been cancelled due to the forthcoming general election and the usual purdah period which applies beforehand.

This is likely to mean that even if a new government is formed before Christmas, a Budget is not likely until January 2020 which would be just weeks before the next Brexit deadline of 31 January 2020. Scotland is still, at the time of writing, planning to hold its Budget 2020-2021 in December.

The Chair of the Office Budget Responsibility has written to HM Treasury to say it intends to publish its restated March forecast on Thursday 7 November.
