Power-sharing returns to Stormont, Northern Ireland assembly resumes

Stormont’s political institutions have been restored as of last week, following three years of deadlock. DUP leader Arlene Foster was appointed as Northern Ireland's first minister, while Sinn Féin's Michelle O'Neill is the Deputy first minister. This news comes following Tánaiste Simon Coveney and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Julian Smith press conference, releasing the text of a deal to restore devolved government in Northern Ireland. It has also been reported that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be travelling to Stormont this morning to meet with the new power-sharing administration.


Draft General Scheme of the Climate Action (Amendment) Bill 2019 published

The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton T.D. published the Draft General Scheme of the Climate Action (Amendment) Bill 2019 last week. This bill has been put forward as a priority legislation in the new Dáil term and supports the Irish Government’s Climate Action Plan published in 2019.

The bill aims to implement the tenants tenets outlined in the Climate Action Plan, including:

  • Establishing a 2050 emissions reduction target in law
  • Making the adoption of carbon budgets a legal requirement
  • Setting decarbonisation targets for each sector of the Irish economy
  • Banning the sale of fossil fuel cars by 2030
  • Establishing that the Climate Action Plan shall be updated annually, with actions in every sector.
