We caught up with the Group Financial Controller of Bord na Móna and Chartered Accountant Ger Breen who talks to us about the Bord na Móna graduate training programme run with Chartered Accountants Ireland.

Q. How long has this programme been running?
I have been with the company for twenty five years and we’ve have been running successful graduate programmes at our company for six years.

Q. What opportunities can graduates expect while training with Bord na Móna?
Our graduates are given excellent training opportunities here at Bord na Móna, gaining experience in many diverse areas of our company including our accounting departments, our tax department as well as our internal audit department to name but a few.

Q. What areas of the business do graduates get exposure to?
Our graduates move between different business units within the group, thus their learning is varied across different industries. For example, learning about carbon tax rules in our Fuels business, the accruals system in our Waste management business, technical accounting for landfill operations, valuation of milled peat stocks and long term provisions or how we sell our electricity generated from our Windfarms back to the grid.

Q. Is the Chartered Accountancy course material put into practice?
There is so much for the graduates to learn here at Bord na Móna and we take great pride in ensuring our graduates receive support and guidance to practice and apply the technical skills they are learning as part of their studies with Chartered Accountants Ireland. The diversity of the Group provides lots of opportunity for graduates to apply their technical expertise to practical issues and provide advice to their colleagues.

Q. What supports are available to graduates during their training?
The training is conducted with our partner Chartered Accountants Ireland and as member of the Institute I know the standard of training is first class.

Our graduates are assigned a mentor, a qualified Chartered Accountant, who will guide them through their time with our company in ensuring they receive the appropriate training to meet the competencies required and are given the necessary resources to focus on their studies.

Chartered Accountancy is a fantastic career and graduates will grow their technical expertise, leadership capability and strategic skills.
