Revenue headline results for 2019

The preliminary results for 2019 tell us that in the past 12 months the Revenue headcount has increased by approximately 500, the main rationale for this staff increase was the prospect of a hard Brexit. Some 580 staff were appointed to Brexit related roles in 2019. In parallel the Revenue running costs increased by €25 million to €450 million. The results provide some statistics on PAYE Modernisation; over €31 billion was paid via the real time PAYE system which was introduced on 1 January 2019.

The headline results for 2019 tell us that over €58 million was collected by the Revenue, income tax was the highest, followed by VAT then corporation tax. The Revenue collected €12,244 million on behalf of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. Local Property Tax was €473 million on behalf of the Local Authorities.

High taxpayer compliance is maintained, 98 percent timely compliance for large and medium cases, all other cases is 89 percent. Over 5,800 taxpayers entered phased payment arrangements with debt of €72 million in 2019.

The number of Revenue compliance interventions was down on 2018 by 5,685 cases, but the debt enforcement (sheriff/solicitor/attachment) cases was up by 50,343 to a total of 82,996 cases in 2019.
