Government recognises important contribution of Chartered Accountants

Minister Michael McGrath and Minister Seán Fleming recently met (virtually) with a delegation from Chartered Accountants Ireland led by President Paul Henry and CEO Barry Dempsey. The issues discussed with the Ministers were informed by feedback from our members, relating to the timing of the TWSS reconciliation process, the end of year review for employees who received TWSS payments, cashflow concerns on the timing of EWSS payments to employers along with proposals for tax measures to support the recovery of the economy.

The Ministers engaged in a constructive discussion and undertook to consider the matters raised further with their respective Department officials.

The Institute also shared our findings from our recent survey on the status of business preparations for Brexit and highlighted the need for the introduction of a deferred method of accounting for VAT on imports from Great Britain regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. Minister McGrath and Minister Fleming, who are both Institute members, made a point of recognising the contribution of Chartered Accountants to the economy and the important public service provided by the profession in business and in practice in these difficult times. Minister McGrath spoke at our Virtual CPD Update on 7 October where the theme was ‘Rebooting the economy’.
