Article 50 to be triggered on Wednesday 29 March

Mar 21, 2017

Ending nine months of speculation, it has been reported that Prime Minister Theresa May will officially notify the EU next week that the UK is leaving the EU.  This meets the end of March 2017 deadline set by Ms May in one of her first speeches as Prime Minister.

We gather that in a statement released by Downing Street, the UK notified the European Council President Donald Tusk this morning that Article 50 will be triggered on 29 March.  Ms May is now expected to write a letter to the 27 other members of the EU and negotiations are expected to begin as quickly as possible.

Mr Tusk said he expects to release an initial response to the Article 50 notification within 48 hours of Article 50 being triggered.
