Recruitment to and transferring of training contracts
Purpose
The training contract ensures that a student achieves the practical experience to achieve competency to practice as a Chartered Accountant once admitted to membership. Trainees develop these skills progressively throughout the term of the contract. As such, a transfer of training contract should only occur in exceptional circumstances.
Transfer of an Active Training Contract
- Permission Required:
Students under contract with an authorised training firm must secure written permission from their current employer to transfer the remaining contract period to another authorised training firm. Any firm considering offering a training contract to a student who is currently under training contract should do so subject to receipt of said permission.
Transferring from Training Contract to Flexible Route
- Permission Needed:
Students wishing to terminate their training contract to pursue their studies via the flexible route must provide Chartered Accountants Ireland with written confirmation that their original training firm has no substantive objections to the trainee continuing their studies. This permission is captured in the “Termination of Training Contract” document.
Agreement on Conditions of the Transfer/Termination of Training Contract:
Before submitting the completed documentation to Chartered Accountants Ireland, the student and firm should agree on the conditions of the transfer, including any refund of any educational expenses that may be requested by the original firm. The Training and Development Log covering the term of the initial contract should be up to date and fully reviewed and locked.

Note:
Early engagement with Chartered Accountants Ireland is strongly recommended to ensure compliance and a smooth process. If a trainee or training firm is unhappy about any aspect of a transfer of training contract request, they are welcome to utilise our complaints procedure to formalise their objection.
