Three new Tax Appeal Commissioners to be appointed

Jun 04, 2019

In order to address the backlog of appeals within the Tax Appeal Commissioners (TAC), the Minister for Finance has approved the appointment of three additional Temporary Appeal Commissioners. This will bring the number of Commissioners to six to address the 3,650 appeals that are currently within the TAC.

The announcement of the three new positions was made by the Department of Finance in an opening statement to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach last Thursday.

The TAC also issued its Annual Report last week and following a very challenging 2017, noted an improvement in its productivity during 2018. 1,440 appeals were closed during 2018, compared to 693 in 2019 and €567 million in tax was collected from the closed appeals.  167 hearings were scheduled for 2018 compared to 65 in 2017.  Referring to the plans to increase its resources, the Annual Report notes that it is “of course conscious that a great deal remains to be done in 2019 and subsequent years. The backlog of appeals and determinations is being addressed as our first priority”.
