Members of the Chartered Accountants Ireland North West Society along with their friends and families were out in force on Strandhill Beach on Sunday 22 May 2022. The group of around 50 volunteers, young and old walked the length and breadth of Strandhill, walking, talking and enjoying all the beauty that the North West has to offer.
Strandhill Beach is well maintained by Sligo County Council and local volunteer groups such as Friends of Strandhill Beach and An Taisce’s Clean Coasts group. Despite this, the clean up on Sunday managed to yield two vanloads and two car boots full of rubbish that otherwise could have ended up in the sea.
Michael Shovelin, Chair of the North West Society of Chartered Accountants Ireland, said
“The clean-up highlighted to myself and our members the challenges that are faced by the Council in maintaining our beauty spots. As a local, I was genuinely surprised to see the amount of waste that the clean up yielded. I think including our members' children in this event was particularly valuable. The next generation will understand the importance of looking after the environment. It also added an element of fun, which we all enjoyed”.
After their hard work members and guests were treated to a fabulous picnic at the Airport Café, topping off a most enjoyable and productive morning of work by all. The committee of Chartered Accountants Ireland North West Society would like to thank Sligo County Council, Clean Coasts, Friends of Strandhill Beach, Seamus McGoldrick of Sligo Surf Experience, Allan Mulrooney of Strandhill’s Peoples Market, The Airport Café and Mammy Johnson’s for their support in making this event a success.
Chartered Accountants Ireland North West Society represents members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland in counties Sligo, Roscommon, Donegal, Leitrim and Mayo. The beach clean was part of the society’s CSR events and reflects some of the core values of Chartered Accountants Ireland: "For tomorrow, for good".
