Course overview

  • Defining artificial intelligence (AI), its subset Generative AI, and their relevance to business
  • What is ‘Responsible AI’, why it matters and is necessary
  • Frameworks and policies for assessing AI use and ensuring it is responsible
  • The risks of not managing AI responsibly
  • The new legal requirements, particularly the EU AI Act, its scope and how to comply
  • Considering the role of the board and senior management in ‘AI Governance’
  • Some of the key ethical issues in using AI/GenAI, such as bias in underlying data, IP infringement and transparency with customers
  • The role of the professional accountant in applying principles of Responsible, Trustworthy AI, including transparency and explainability, security and safety, accountability, and related controls and risk management.

Key learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand ‘Responsible AI’ and its implications for businesses and other organisations
  • Assess employee use levels and risks (e.g. shadow use)
  • Manage those risks, applying key principles like transparency, safety and accountability
  • Be aware of the legal requirements, particularly the directly effective EU AI Act
  • Have an overview of and apply governance best practice
  • Consider the key ethical issues
  • Navigate the complexities of balancing compliance with innovation.

Speaker Bio

Michael Diviney is Executive Head of Thought Leadership at Chartered Accountants Ireland

Brian McElligott is a Partner with Mason Hayes & Curran Technology Law and is Head of the Artificial Intelligence team. Prior to re-joining the firm in 2023, he was Chief Intellectual Property counsel with an Irish AI fintech start-up. In preparing clients for compliance with the EU AI Act, Brian guides them through: AI Act strategy and compliance planning; prohibited and high-risk AI systems threshold analyses; high-risk AI systems compliance; and advises LLM/GenAI providers on their obligations.

Keith Power is a Partner with PwC, Dublin, where he trained as a Chartered Accountant. He is also a Certified Information Systems Auditor and brings a multidisciplinary approach to his role as PwC’s Trust in AI Leader.  With extensive expertise in artificial intelligence, data analytics, financial modelling, risk management and governance, Keith is passionate about prioritising Responsible AI while championing the technology’s potential, and helping clients navigate the complexities of compliance and innovation.

Andreea Wade is a General Partner at Delta Partners VC. An entrepreneur, AI product strategist, and start-up mentor with extensive experience in AI product development and innovation, she co-founded Opening.io, a talent intelligence platform leveraging AI, acquired by iCIMS in 2020. At iCIMS, Andreea was VP of Artificial Intelligence, leading initiatives in AI-powered hiring solutions. She is currently Chair of Recruitroo, a venture-backed start-up and has served on the board of Women in Technology and Science.
