Technical Manager

Term: permanent
Hours: full time
Location: hybrid working arrangement in Chartered Accountants Ireland, Dublin Office

About the Institute

Chartered Accountants Ireland is the largest and longest established professional accountancy body in Ireland, representing over 38,400 members around the world and educating 6,600 students. The Institute aims to create opportunities for members and students, and ethical, sustainable prosperity for society. An all-island body, Chartered Accountants Ireland was established by Royal Charter in 1888 and now has members in more than 100 countries. It is a founding member of Chartered Accountants Worldwide, the international network of over one million chartered accountants. It also plays key roles in the Global Accounting Alliance, Accountancy Europe and the International Federation of Accountants.

Institute values

The Institute seeks to ensure an environment based on its values of Innovation with Ambition, Collaboration for Impact, Speed and Simplicity, Trust, Inclusion, and For Tomorrow, For Good. Candidates should be able to demonstrate how these may apply to them in the role for which they are applying and how their previous experience is relevant to them.

The role

Are you an experienced and ambitious qualified accountant?

Are you interested in being part of an expert team at the centre of the Irish accountancy profession?

Do you enjoy a rapidly changing environment where initiative is encouraged?

We are an all-island of Ireland organisation.  We currently want to hire a Technical Manager on the Professional Accountancy team primarily to support our Corporate Reporting and Audit & Assurance work, including sustainability reporting and assurance. We can provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Work closely with senior members of the profession in practice and industry, experts in the areas of financial reporting, audit and assurance, sustainability reporting, AML, sanctions and company law;
  • Liaise with Government departments, State agencies and international standard setters;
  • Enhance your technical knowledge working with experts in financial reporting, auditing and company law;
  • Enhance your communication skills;
  • Draft reports and articles for publication on the Institute website, in Accountancy Ireland and for external parties
  • Develop and provide guidance to Chartered Accountants Ireland members both North and South; and
  • Be part of a team which creates key material guidance and content for the accountancy profession in Ireland.

There is a competitive salary and benefits on offer, and we provide a good work life balance.

Key responsibilities

The Advocacy and Voice Department is responsible for the public policy agenda of Chartered Accountants Ireland.  We work with expert colleagues drawn from practice and industry, developing and advocating policy on financial reporting, audit and assurance, tax, ethics and governance and business law.  The department currently numbers 20 professionals.

The technical team within this department is responsible for a broad technical policy agenda of relevance to the Institute and its membership. This team works with expert volunteers drawn from practice and industry.  We coordinate policy approaches and develop guidance for members. The technical team deals with financial reporting, insolvency, audit and assurance, company law, sustainability reporting and a number of associated areas including company secretarial matters, sanctions and anti-money laundering for both the British and Irish jurisdictions. The role includes undertaking project work in areas of focus for the team and in particular in the area of sustainability reporting.

This exciting and varied work includes:

  • Supporting the Sustainability Reporting working group and assisting with consultations;
  • Addressing public consultations from international accounting, auditing and ethics standard setters, including the FRC, the IASB, EFRAG, IAASA and the IAASB;
  • Liaising with various Irish and UK Government Departments on company law and other business legislation impacting on the work of accountants;
  • Liaising with European organisations such as Accountancy Europe and EFRAG, attending their events and participating in their working groups
  • Dealing with various regulatory and other state agencies such as the Central Bank of Ireland, IAASA, ODCE, CEA, CRO, FCA and the UK Companies Office on regulatory and other matters relevant to the profession and business;
  • Working on projects of common interest with other Professional Accountancy Organisations in Ireland and abroad;
  • Speaking at Institute sponsored events such as CPD courses and conferences; and
  • Helping colleagues in other departments within the Institute on technical matters.

The candidate

  • At least five years’ experience in practice in the area of assurance;
  • A strong interest in technical matters;
  • A self-starter with plenty of initiative and an ability to work both on your own and as part of a team;
  • A good understanding of the legal framework and technical requirements faced by accountants, and auditors;
  • Experience or an interest in sustainability reporting would be desirable;
  • A high focus on quality;
  • Strong written and oral communication, presentation and influencing skills; and
  • Strong project management skills and the drive and determination to see projects through to a conclusion.

The role is full time and based in our Dublin office but may involve some travel within Ireland, north and south, to the UK and occasionally to other European countries. Travel outside of Ireland would not be excessive, generally two to three times a year.

Flexible work arrangements

The Institute is seeking and encourages applications from experienced candidates who may be looking for flexible work arrangements. If such arrangements are being sought please bring these to the attention of your interviewer.

The Institute will use the information which you have provided in this form to respond to your request or process your application and will hold and protect it in accordance with the Institute's privacy statement, which explains your rights in relation to your personal data.  By submitting this application acknowledge you have read our privacy statement.
