Spam filters

What are spam filters

A spam filter is an email service feature designed to block spam from a user's inbox. Because a large amount of global email messages are spam, effective spam filters are critical to maintaining clean and spam-free inboxes.

With unsolicited and unwanted email becoming a larger problem, email services have made their spam filters more stringent. Unfortunately, these tougher guidelines for filtering can cause legitimate emails to be mistaken as spam.

Checking your Spam / Junk Mail Folders

MSN Hotmail

Checking spam/junk mail folder:
  1. Log into your email account.
  2. To check your Junk Folder, simply click the Junk Folder link on the left.
Add safe senders / whitelist:

Whitelisting a sender will make sure that messages from a specific email address are always sent to your email inbox.

  1. Open your mailbox and click Options
  2. Click the Junk E-Mail Protection link.
  3. Select the Safe List link.
  4. Add the email address no-reply@charteredaccountants.ie or domaincharteredaccountants.ie into the dialog box titled Type an address or domain.
  5. Click the Add button next to the dialog box.

If the mailing is in your Junk E-Mail Folder, open the email and click the Not Junk button

You should also check that the mailing's email address is not in your Blocked Senders list. You can find your Blocked Senders list by following the directions above and going to Blocked Senders List instead of Safe List. If you see the mailing's from address on this list, select it and click the Remove button.

Google Gmail

Checking spam/junk mail folder:
  1. Log into your Gmail account
  2. If the Spam folder does not appear on the left, click the more option just above contacts
  3. Select Spam to view messages in the spam folder

Gmail's spam filters also work in your IMAP client by automatically diverting messages that are suspected of being unwanted messages into Spam and keeping them out of your inbox.

Add safe senders / whitelist:

Whitelisting a sender will make sure that messages from a specific email address are always sent to your email inbox.

  1. Follow the Settings link in Gmail.
  2. Go to Filters.
  3. Click Create a new filter.
  4. Type the desired email address under From:.
  5. You do not have to create a separate filter for each address. Separate addresses with | in the From: field instead. To whitelist both "info@charteredaccountants.ie" and "webmaster@charteredaccountants.ie", enter info@charteredaccountants.ie|webmaster@charteredaccountants.ie

To whitelist an entire domain (all mail from an address ending in "charteredaccountants.ie", for example), type the just the domain name or the domain name preceded by @. To whitelist "charteredaccountants.ie", for instance, type @charteredaccountants.ie.

More Information

Hopefully that has clarified things for you and as was previously mentioned if there is something that you aren't sure whether you need or not it's usually safer to leave cookies enabled in case it does interact with one of the features you use on our site. However if you are still looking for more information then you can contact us through one of our preferred contact methods.
