2024 in numbers

This dataset is an overview of key data points of the profile of Chartered Accountants Ireland membership taken from Annual Report 2024.

Membership numbers

The total membership on 31 December 2023 was 32,899. The total for 2024 was 39,031. There was a 6,132 year-on-year increase in membership. This increase takes account members who resigned or passed away in 2024, as well as new members post-amalgamation with CPA Ireland in September 2024. There were 1,379 new student-to-member admissions in 2024 and do not include 39 reciprocal admissions.

Membership breakdown

There were 25,033 (64%) members in business.
There were 3,834 (10%) members in practice.
There were 6,847 (18%) members employed in practice.
There were 2,203 (6%) members who were retired.
There were 782 members on a career break.
There were 316 (less than 1%) unremunerated members.
There were 16 (less than 1%) members on parental absence.

Age breakdown

There were 9,473 members aged 23 to 34.
There were 12,044 members aged 35 to 44.
There were 8,696 members aged 45 to 54.
There were 5,216 members aged 55 to 64.
There were 3,602 members aged 65 and over.

Gender breakdown

There were 16,955 (43.4%) female members.
There were 22,033 (56.5%) male members.
There were 43 (0.1%) undisclosed members.

In practice versus in business

There were 10,681 (28%) members in practice.
There were 25,033 (64%) members in business.
There were 3,317 (8%) members in other.

Global footprint

There were 27,581 members in the Republic of Ireland.
There were 5,285 members in Northern Ireland.
There were 1,839 members in Great Britain.
There were 578 members in mainland Europe.
There were 3,748 members in the rest of the world.

International locations

The top 10 international locations were:
