Six questions in six minutes with Clare Murphy en route to Sydney

Clare Murphy trained in EY in Waterford and spent some time in the earlier stages of her career in Sydney before moving back to Kilkenny and more recently has been based in Cork. Having progressed in her career over the years, she is excited to continue her career journey back in Sydney where she has two siblings and plans to return this autumn. Clare returns to Australia at a more advanced career level and has already started leveraging the strong network of members there. We caught up with Clare during her preparations. 1. Where did you grow up and where do you live now? I grew up in Wexford before moving to Bunmahon, Co. Waterford midway through my childhood. More recently, I have been living and working in Cork, though I will be returning to Sydney at the end of October. I studied Commerce International with German at University College Cork, which included an Erasmus year in Konstanz, Germany. After graduating, I began my training with Chartered Accountants Ireland, working with EY Waterford for three and a half years. Following that, I moved to Sydney where I gained nine months of international experience before returning home to live and work in Kilkenny for 18 months. This past year I’ve been based in Cork, continuing to develop both professionally and personally, while preparing for the next stage of my career back in Australia. 2. What made you choose to become a Chartered Accountant? And if you weren't a Chartered Accountant, what do you think you would like to have been? I always loved working with numbers and enjoyed maths and accountancy in school, so that was telling enough. I was also interested in engineering, architecture or lecturing (I love the academic world). Or perhaps I would have thrown my hat at anything sports-related! 3. Can you tell us a little about how you got to where you are today – both the geographical relocations and career path. I’ve always been quite active — growing up I played camogie competitively in and for Waterford, and more recently I’ve turned to running, which has fitted in well with living all over Ireland and in Sydney, a city that thrives on an active lifestyle. My professional journey started in financial audit with EY Waterford, before moving into financial consulting with EY Dublin. That mix of audit and commercial exposure gave me a really solid grounding in accountancy, and it was the perfect base for moving into more analytical and commercially focused roles. From there, I took on an FP&A role in Sydney, which sparked a career path I’ve loved. Since then, I’ve worked across FP&A, finance business partnering and finance manager roles. These roles have combined not only analysis, forecasting and commercial awareness, but also leadership, project delivery, and working with a wide range of stakeholders to influence decisions and drive improvements. It’s been a varied path, but the common thread has always been using financial insight to add value to the business. 4. What do you value most about your membership of the profession and how do you think those benefits can be used to support the economy and society?  For me, the real value of the profession is the credibility and global recognition it brings. The CA qualification has enabled me to build a career that has taken me around Ireland and across the world — with Australia being a choice I was able to make because of the strength of the designation. It has given me the confidence to work across industries and countries while staying connected to a strong professional community. Beyond individual careers, the profession supports the economy by driving better business decisions, stronger governance, and growth. And on a societal level, it creates a community of people all over the world who share the same standards, values, and commitment to transparency. That sense of trust and connection is more important now than ever in supporting both businesses and society as a whole. 5. As a member that has lived away from Ireland, returned and is on the move again, can you talk to us about how your membership has been of value to you here and living overseas?  As I mentioned, I have a network and community I can link in with again. In addition, the Institute teams are always open to connecting members and assisting members across a variety of career paths. 6. What were the most significant/noticeable differences you encountered doing business and networking away from home and back in Ireland?  Away from home, I found that having connections was vital — in Sydney, even a small network made a big difference when starting from scratch. Networking there is fast-paced and often happens outside formal settings, so leaning on those relationships was key. Back in Ireland, it feels easier to build connections on your own. The community is smaller and very interconnected, which means relationships grow more naturally and often overlap between personal and professional circles. I’m really looking forward to going back to Sydney and building on my network — there’s a strong connection between Ireland and Australia, and I’ve already reaped the benefits of it, so it will be great to nurture that further.

Chartered Accountants Ireland New York member chapter event

Minister of State at the Department of Finance Robert Troy welcomed guests to a Chartered Accountants Ireland New York member chapter event hosted in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland’s Strategic Financial Leadership programme last night. The event was held at the Consulate General of Ireland New York, with Gerald Angley, the new Consul General and his team in attendance. The panel discussion event, titled “Strategic scaling: Empowering financial leaders for growth,” was attended by approximately 100 members from New York and surrounding regions and other guests. Attendees on the evening also heard from Daryl Regan, Programme Manager of Enterprise Ireland’s Strategic Finance Leadership programme as well as Chartered Accountants Ireland’s Global Member Manager Gillian Duffy. Introducing the event, Minister Troy highlighted the importance of Irish companies' contributions to the U.S. economy, noting Ireland as the 6th largest source of Foreign Direct Investment in the U.S. The Minister acknowledged the vital role of professional bodies like Chartered Accountants Ireland in supporting economic growth. He emphasised the need for CFOs to be strategic leaders and encouraged networking to build relationships that will drive future success and global engagement. He noted the vital role of member networks like the Chartered Accountants Ireland New York member chapter as a testament to global reach and ambition. The event was a panel discussion of Chartered Accountants Ireland members who are based in New York and the surrounding regions recounting their journeys and learnings. They gave advice on expanding businesses beyond Ireland; navigating the advantages and challenges of cultural differences when expanding overseas; dealing with payroll compliance and tax complexities; how their Chartered training has played a pivotal role in getting them to where they are today and embracing AI. Other advice was to think big, be aware of costs which can often be higher than in Ireland, have a strong structure and don’t be afraid to articulate your successes and wins. Also in attendance at the event were Shane Rogers FCA FCPA – President of CAW Network USA, and Institute Council member Conall McGonagle FCA FCPA – CFO and CAO of the Ireland Funds America. Six questions in six minutes with Sophie Dillon in Toronto

A co-founder with a passion for using her skills and experience for a positive impact, Sophie Dillon took the leap from Kells to Toronto via Dublin. We caught up with Sophie recently to hear her story. 1. Where did you grow up and where do you live now? I grew up in Kells, Co Meath and studied at University College Dublin. Today, I live in Toronto, Canada. I had always wanted to build an international career, and Toronto offered the kind of dynamic, fast-moving business environment I was looking for. 2. What led you to chartered accountancy? Studying Commerce in UCD, I found I really enjoyed the structure and logic of accounting. I’ve always liked solving problems and the qualification offered a solid foundation with broad career options—whether in practice, industry, or something more entrepreneurial down the line. As a child and teenager, I had a real passion for  showjumping and I think if I hadn't come down this road I would have loved a career in the equestrian industry! 3. Can you tell us a little about how you got to where you are today – both the geographical relocation and career path? I trained with KPMG’s Restructuring department in Dublin, where I worked with businesses navigating financial challenges. From there, I joined KKR, working on their European leveraged credit team, focusing on healthcare investments. I later moved to Canada and held several finance leadership roles, including at an early-stage healthcare startup. Today I’m the co-founder of Orbit Accountants, a firm set up in 2023 to support SMEs across Canada and the US with bookkeeping, payroll, tax and fractional CFO services. I co-founded the company with Malay Matalia who I met in Toronto. We shared a belief that SMEs and growing businesses deserve better access to high quality financial support. Toronto is a global city, and moving here really broadened my perspective, opening up a network I might not otherwise have encountered. 4. What do you value most about your membership of the profession and how do you think those benefits can be used to support the economy and society? The training really sharpens your ability to think critically, assess risk, and communicate clearly—skills that are valuable far beyond finance. As the economy evolves, there’s a real need for professionals who can leverage financial data for strategic insights and support good decision-making. 5. As a member living away from Ireland, can you talk to us about how your membership has been of value to you living overseas? The designation carries weight internationally, and that’s been important for building trust in a new market. It also creates an instant sense of community—particularly with the strong network of Irish professionals here in Toronto. That network has been valuable both professionally and personally. 6. What were the most significant/noticeable differences you encountered doing business and networking away from home and back in Ireland? Networking in Ireland tends to be more informal and relationship-led from the start. In Canada, there’s a bit more structure around it—people are generous with their time, but there’s usually a clear agenda. Both styles have their strengths, and I’ve found that being able to adapt between the two has been a real asset. My experience working abroad as a Chartered Accountant in Costa Rica

As a newly qualified Chartered Accountant, Paul Barron ACA was offered a position in Costa Rica. He packed his bags for Central America and now reflects on his experience - with some insights and advice for others in the same position. I trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG, qualifying in 2014. Shortly after finishing my training position, I took up a position with Fyffes (the banana people!) as an internal audit manager. This position involved travelling to the various Fyffes locations worldwide, performing controls testing as well as inquiring and then reporting back to the Board of Directors with my findings. After nine months in this role, I was offered a longer-term position as Financial Controller in Costa Rica. It seemed like a great opportunity to have a new experience and progress my career, so I went for it. I was nervous of course, but I spent three years in this role before returning to Head office in Dublin in March 2020.  Overall it was a great experience and I am very glad I did it, and here are my thoughts on the benefits and challenges of working abroad as a Chartered Accountant. Benefits and opportunities Excellent work opportunity – I managed a team of 12 people and was a central part of our operations in Central America. My willingness to relocate afforded me the chance to have a very stimulating and dynamic job which I don’t think I would have been considered for, at that stage of my career (1-year PQE), in companies of a similar size had I remained in Ireland. I got valuable management experience and really had to hit the ground running, which has stood to me since. Experience and exposure to interesting, varied work. I think I might have been exposed to some of these in a standard setting but going abroad to Costa Rica meant I was doing standard work in a non-standard (for me) environment like a large-scale farming operation or getting to see the tangible links between the finance team and the operation itself. During my three years in Costa Rica, I: got hands-on FC experience reviewing a large farming operation had the opportunity to manage a cross-cultural team was exposed to and given the opportunity to manage large capital projects interacted with most of the departments within the business and learned more about how they work Experience of a new culture and a new language Spanish was the language in the office and the operation, so I took classes and worked extremely hard on getting to a conversational level in my first six months working in Costa Rica. I like languages and have French in my primary and master’s degrees, so this was very enjoyable but also tiring and a big challenge I lived and worked in an area of the world about which I knew very little before relocating – it was enjoyable getting to know about a new culture, food, people and traditions and I’ll always have a nice connection with Costa Rica and  friends made along the way. Challenges The first nine months were exhausting with getting to grips with a new job that entailed a lot of responsibility; learning a new language; settling into a new home and trying to make new friends. I’d recommend a long holiday after about six months if you are considering relocating.  It takes some time to adjust to working within a cross-cultural team. I enjoyed the different outlook as time went on, but at times different approaches to tackling problems surprised and sometimes frustrated me. It was definitely a learning curve I was lucky that I had some Irish colleagues in the Costa Rican office. This certainly helped but integrating into a very different culture was tough and isolating at times and should be considered before relocating.  In summary Overall, I am really glad to have done it. I feel privileged to have been offered the opportunity to experience working in Costa Rica. Going to a different language, culture and climate all give rise to moments of culture shock and homesickness, but also moments of real enjoyment. You do need to be realistic about the pros and cons but also resilient and somewhat brave.  Having the comfort of my ACA qualification and Institute membership, my Irish colleagues in Costa Rica and my company support both there and at home all made the move much more accessible. I could have come up with as many reasons to not go as to go, so I have no regrets but am happy to be home! The experience in Costa Rica did definitely help me to establish and progress within my career and I know will continue to stand to me. I may still keep my eyes and ears open for other international opportunities. Institute supports I found the Career service very helpful throughout. I spoke with Karin Lanigan on average three or four times a year and still do on my career development. It has been extremely useful to help me plan my career and also have a sounding board when decisions have to be made. It is a great and unbiased service which has been a real help to me. In particular, it helped me plan my move home - which can be as challenging a transition as the initial move.

Six questions in six minutes on moving home with Marie-Claire McDonnell

We caught up recently with Marie-Claire McDonnell who has recently returned to Ireland having spent 12 years living and working in Toronto to find out more about the ups and downs of returning home.  1. After 12 years living in Toronto, was there a pivotal moment when you were sure it was time to make the move back to Ireland? We were very happy and settled living in the suburbs of Toronto. My husband (also an Irish accountant) was approached regarding a relocation with his work to their Dublin office. It was a fantastic opportunity for him and a relocation package to your home country is not something that comes up very often. Our three children are still young and we felt it was the right time to move if we were ever going to do it.  2. What was your biggest concern (if any), about moving back and how did you overcome it/them?  I guess the biggest concern is the fear of whether you are making the right decision for everyone in your family. Going from being completely set up in your life after 12 years to starting from complete scratch gets very overwhelming, especially where children are involved. It's important to focus on the reasons for making the move in the first place, the positives of living in Ireland versus abroad.  3. What advice would you give to a member who is at a similar stage?  Preparation is key. Making a list of all the big ticket items that need to be done and working through it with a long lead up time. We had a good six months to prepare before leaving Canada. It is also really beneficial to speak to people who have made a similar move and understand the pain points and the processes involved for various items. I was lucky to have some friends who made the move back before us who I leaned on for advice. Finally, what really helped us moving with small children was that I could take unpaid leave for a few months after we arrived to help get everyone settled. It really helped our family with the transition.  4. What do you think you will miss most about Toronto?  We miss our friends a lot – that is the hardest part. We are lucky that Toronto is very accessible from Dublin so we will be back again soon for a visit.  5. What do you appreciate most about being back in Ireland?   We love being closer to family. When you live abroad you spend most of your holidays coming back to Ireland to visit family and friends. There are lots of options in Ireland for mini breaks and also Europe is on our doorstep so we look forward to many years of fun holidays exploring. 6. What is next for you? I was also very lucky to transfer my role with my employer to their Dublin office. I took the summer off so am now settling back into work and real Irish life!! Six questions in six minutes with Alan Ennis

Alan T. Ennis FCA is a board director, advisor and former CEO and president of Revlon Inc. His experience has taught him the power of pride in his achievements and advocating for himself. What do you value most about your membership of the profession? In everything I’ve done here in the US, my qualification as a Chartered Accountant has been the most valuable jewel in my chest of knowledge. Even today, my finance background continues to be invaluable in terms of buying and selling businesses, understanding capital structures and capital markets.  It has been the same throughout my career. I put a lot of my progression at Revlon down to my training. I could understand financial statements, I understood the importance of profitability and cash and how investments work. I could talk to the Board of Directors in those terms and it was invaluable. What advice would you have for other Chartered Accountants thinking of moving to the US? My advice is to make sure you start to connect with other Chartered Accountants over here straight away – and there are lots of us in New York, Boston, San Francisco and other places. That’s a valuable network. The other piece of advice I would have is that it’s okay to put yourself out there – in fact, it’s a good idea. Americans tend to be confident in how they present themselves professionally. They are proud of what they have done and they're confident in their success and in their abilities.  They're not afraid to talk about it. Irish people, myself included at times, tend to downplay our achievements and abilities. In the US, people won’t necessarily understand that so it’s not a bad idea to learn to advocate for yourself, your skills and talents. What made you choose to become a Chartered Accountant? I studied commerce at University College Dublin, graduating in 1991. Going through the BComm in those days, you had two options: you could follow the management track or the accounting track. The management track covered topics like organisational design, leadership, strategy and marketing. I said to my dad, “I think I'm going to choose that,” and he replied, “oh no, you should do accounting.” At that time, I didn’t think I wanted to be an accountant, but my dad said to me said, “you do, you just don’t know it yet.”So, I followed the accounting track, joined Arthur Andersen in 1991 and raced through my Chartered Accountancy exams. Can you tell us a little about how you got to where you are today – both your relocation and career path? When I was training with Arthur Andersen, I understood how beneficial training in accounting could be in business. I was fairly certain that I wouldn’t stay in the auditing field and become a partner in an accounting firm.  That wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a Chartered Accountant and then move out into industry, but I did stay with Arthur Andersen for a while, becoming a manager before leaving Ireland in my mid-twenties.  I moved to the UK to join Ingersoll Rand in Manchester and then negotiated a transfer to the company’s New Jersey office in 1999. I moved through various financial roles from internal audit to financial planning and investor relations. In 2004, I was offered a new position as CFO of Ingersoll Rand’s Bobcat division in North Dakota. At the same time, I was offered the position of Head of Internal Audit at Revlon.  I was in my early thirties and my choice was between Bobcat in Fargo, North Dakota, and this other role with a very different and much smaller company that would put me right in the heart of New York. I chose Revlon. Can you talk us through your experience at Revlon? Being a Chartered Accountant put me in a very good place to understand the financial operations of any corporation and that really stood me in good stead at Revlon. It had a lot of debt at the time. Joining the company was a high-risk move, but I thought, “you know what, I’m going to go for it.”  Within two-and-half years, I had gone from Head of Internal Audit to Corporate Controller to President of International and then Chief Financial Officer. Eventually, I was appointed Chief Executive, a position I held for five years reporting to the company’s Chair, Ron Perelman. What about your work now? I had a great run at Revlon and a superb team of people behind me. When I left that role in 2014, I got a great package and I wasn’t really under pressure anymore to prove myself. I had choices. I’ve since dabbled in private equity and joined a couple of boards, both profit and not-for-profit. The board that occupies most of my time right now is Nutrabolt, a sports nutrition company whose leading product is C4, a pre-workout energy drink. I am the company’s Vice-chair, Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Nominating Governance Committee. I’m also Nutrabolt’s lead Independent Director.  Alan T. Ennis is on numerous boards across a variety of industries, including at present the IDA and Nutrabolt.
