Using LAMBDA - the Ultimate Excel Function (ROI/NI)

Summary

Office 365 subscribers have access to what Microsoft calls "The Ultimate Worksheet Function". The LAMBDA function allows the creation of user defined functions (Lambdas) as part of your spreadsheet, eliminating much of the need for VBA and its associated complexity and security risks.

CPD course
Category:
Technology and data

Format

This course will be delivered via Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to participants the day before the course is due to take place.

Who should attend

Participants on this course should be comfortable with Excel and creating sheets with complex formulas. Attendance on our Excel Intermediate and Excel Advanced courses or having equivalent knowledge is recommended.

Course overview

LAMBDA allows you to greatly simplify complex formulas by breaking them into small and simple user defined functions (Lambdas) without needing VBA coding. Simplifying complex formulas will make your spreadsheets more understandable, maintainable, secure and with less potential for errors.

LAMBDA and the associated Lambda Helper Functions along with Dynamic Arrays and the LET function will radically improve the way complex spreadsheets are written. Understanding these innovations is vital for any Excel Power User.

  • Why do Microsoft call LAMBDA the ultimate Excel function?
  • Difference between user defined functions written in VBA and using LAMBDA function
  • Security improvements comparing VBA to LAMBDA
  • Using the LAMBDA function
  • Recap of Intermediate and Advanced Excel Features - LAMBDA works with Dynamic Arrays, LET and other Excel features
  • Using the Advanced Formula Environment
  • Intermediate Lambda Topics - parameters, optional parameters, functions that require a Lambda, recursive Lambdas.
  • Lambda Helper Functions - overview of the Lambda helper functions including MAKEARRAY, BYROW and BYCOL, MAP, REDUCE and SCAN
  • How to write, test and share your Lambdas
  • Practical Examples - convert a complex formula to a simple Lambda. Perform rate-band calculations. Simplify Complex Lookups, Sort a Range using an ID that contains text and numbers.

      Key learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

      • Write User Defined Functions without needing to use VBA
      • Simplify complex Excel formulas by creating User Defined Functions using LAMBDA
      • Understand Dynamic Arrays and the functions that produce them
      • Break complex formulas into simple steps using the LET function
      • Work comfortably using the Advanced Formula Environment plugin
      • Understand the limitations of Lambdas
      • Be able to securely share your Lambdas with your colleagues
      • Sort a range using an ID that is made up of text and a number correctly.
      • Be able to perform operations on ranges using SEQUENCE, INDEX, TRANSPOSE and UNIQUE

All participants should please note the following

      • Test session. If you would like to test your connection and setup prior to your course, please contact info@professional.ie or 016627700 and we will arrange this with you.
      • Two monitors. Having two monitors is very strongly recommended for this training. It allows you to view the trainers PC in one monitor and the application that is the subject of the training in the other. On a single screen it can be difficult to arrange the trainers screen and your own application comfortably. If you only have a single screen please inform the trainer - ideally before the test session - and they can help you to get the best from the training session.
      • Microsoft Office version. We use Microsoft Office 365 Professional. If you are using an older version please be aware that you might not be able to do some of the exercises that are using the latest features.
      • Windows 10. We prepare the files and deliver the course using Windows 10. If you are using a MacBook or other platform please be aware that there can sometimes be incompatibilities and there are certain features that are not available on the Macintosh edition of Microsoft Office 365 Professional. These issues can be identified and resolved during the test session.
