Key competencies

Acquiring and demonstrating competency

Competency is the ability to apply knowledge, understanding and skills in performing to the standards required in employment.

Recognition has been given to the fact that the acquisition and demonstration of competency may be met in different ways. Therefore the Chartered route to membership involves a number of elements:

  1. Academic study, usually within a recognised third-level college or university, including appropriate assessment and course work
  2. Work experience within a training contract at a Chartered firm or approved organisation. This is supported by the online CA Diary.
  3. Professional education programme provided by Chartered Accountants Ireland through the Student Services Department
  4. Assessment process culminating in the Final Admitting Examination (FAE)

These elements offer the Chartered student full opportunity to acquire, develop and demonstrate the required CA competencies.
