Speakers
Valerie Evans has had a long career in
the NI Audit Office, initially specialising in value for money audit but, for
the last 10 years, working in counter fraud. Valerie’s main responsibility is
coordinating the National Fraud Initiative (NFI) in Northern Ireland. The NFI is
a cross-jurisdictional data matching exercise run every two years, with over 80
NI public sector organisations participating. Valerie has also helped to
produce a number of good practice guides for the benefit of NI public sector
organisations, on topics such as managing fraud risk and raising concerns.
More recently, and against a backdrop of increased fraud risk due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, Valerie has been involved in the production of a series of
fraud risk guides, aimed at helping public sector organisations to recognise the
key fraud risks they face, and outlining the range of controls that can mitigate those risks. Valerie’s presentation
will provide an overview of two of these fraud risk guides – procurement
fraud risks and grant fraud risks. Procurement and grants have
come under the spotlight as a result of the pressures of the

outlined in these guides.
