VERY URGENT: They need and deserve your Support

Apr 22, 2016

As of today’s date donations to Chartered Accountants Support have been a fraction of the norm. At the beginning of April donations were €58k compared to €237k in the same period last year. Since then they have virtually stopped. Hence this communication.

I have a feeling that there is a sense, amongst many of you, that there is no need for the work that the Benevolent Associations (now Chartered Accountants Support) does. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the most deserving cases Dawn Leane the Administrator who succeeded Oliver O’Brien, has to deal with are dependent including sick children. Just think that it could happen to you!

Currently we are beginning to use our cash reserves but these will only last till the end of the year. It is urgent that we replenish our reserves as quickly as possible. Failure to do so will mean curtailing basic supports to the most vulnerable of our members and their dependents, such as back to school expenses.

Changes to the manner in which donations were collected this year along with the change of name, may have caused confusion see more details below. So, if you normally made a donation and perhaps think that you included something with your annual subscription in all probability you or whoever pays your subscription did not, so please check and send your donation as soon as possible to Chartered Accountants Support.

If you don’t normally make a donation, please reconsider. When I first became involved with the Benevolent Association the average stood at over 50% of the members.Today it stands at just over 20%. The total membership is now 24,500 of which over 19,000 do not make a donation. I would add that it is the younger members, under the age of 45, who do not give. If you are in this category perhaps you think you will never find yourself in a situation where you depend on assistance from Chartered Accountants Support – none of our current beneficiaries thought they would need our support either.

Please, please make a Donation today:

  1. Donate online
  2. Donate over the phone by calling +353 1 6377212
  3. Donate with a cheque or credit card via the post or email

For ROI tax payers, the Revenue Commissioners allows Chartered Accountants Support to make an application for tax relief from annual donations of €250 or more. If you are a UK tax payer, Chartered Accountants Support can reclaim tax (Gift Aid) on any amount you donate.

The recommended donations are €100 (£80) but just make sure you make a donation.

Best wishes

Naming and strategy

In the middle of last year the Benevolent Associations developed a new strategy with the view of getting close to members and providing a support network for members who were facing difficulties across a wide number of areas. These included stress, retraining, placement but the core work of the Benevolent Associations of giving financial help to those, who through no fault of their own, found themselves in financial difficulty remained was critical to the ethos.

It was also agree that the name needed to reflect these changes, hence Chartered Accountants Support Ltd is the new name for the companies North and South. The changes were communicated in the August / September edition of Accountancy Ireland.
