Latest from Protocol talks
This week, Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič and UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss held a second meeting on the Northern Ireland Protocol implementation. The meeting followed a week of intensive talks between both sides.
In a statement following the meeting, the EU’s chief negotiator highlighted to Ms Truss that they “needed to start taking things off the table” and urged that both sides must delve into the issues relating to moving goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Mr Šefčovič said the EU had proposed “an extensive reduction of formalities unmatched for any third country” and “a timely agreement on durable solutions” would immediately help operators on the ground.
A statement from the UK government said that both Ms Truss and Mr Šefčovič “reaffirmed their shared desire for a positive EU-UK relationship underpinned by our shared belief in freedom and democracy and cooperation on common global challenges.”
Both sides will meet again next week and agreed that the EU-UK Joint Committee on the Withdrawal Agreement will take place in February.

Sign up for webinars on using the UKCA mark
The new UK conformity assessment marking (UKCA) rules, replacing the EU’s CE mark, will come into force from 1 January 2023. Manufacturers will need to start to use the UKCA to place goods on the market in Great Britain to ensure consumers are protected from unsafe, and non-compliant goods. There are different rules for Northern Ireland and the series of webinars hosted by the UK government should help businesses understand the process of adopting UKCA safety markings.
