Details of forthcoming consultations and a new initiative by the National Audit Office feature this week.

  • The Office of Tax Simplification has a number of vacancies
  • In a recent written ministerial statement, details have been provided of what consultations and consultation responses will be published in the coming months
  • The National Audit Office – University of Birmingham Tax Centre was launched in January 2018 to “deliver independent evidence to improve tax efficiency”
  • HMRC has published a press release “Getting ready for the Customs Declaration Service” about a new service which will start its phased launch in August 2018. This will affect businesses that import or export goods between the UK and non-EU countries. The new service will replace the existing Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system, with all declarations taking place on CDS from early 2019
  • HMRC have published updated Anti-money laundering guidance for the accountancy sector
  • HMRC are continuing to warn about an iTunes gift card scam targeted at older or vulnerable people. This scam is still being widely used. In a recent press release HMRC explained what it has been doing to combat the scam
  • An updated list of upcoming tax tribunal appeal hearings, including details of previous cases has been published
  • Use the updated register to check the status of overseas corporate lenders who are passport holders for Double Taxation Relief on UK loan interest
  • Use the online service to appeal a £100 late filing penalty, or form SA370 to appeal any late filing or late payment penalty
  • Use the employment history consent form to let HMRC exchange and disclose information with your solicitor
  • Class 1A National Insurance contributions on benefits in kind (CWG5) has been updated
  • Flexibly accessed pension payment: repayment claim (P55) has been updated
  • HMRC has issued guidance on changes to enveloped UK dwellings and related finance which took effect from 6 April 2017 and limit the availability of excluded property for inheritance tax
  • HMRC have published a consultation seeking views on how to make the employment status rules for employment rights and tax clearer for individuals and businesses
  • HMRC has published a warning about the use of contractor loan schemes, following a ruling by the ASA about misleading advertising by a tax avoidance scheme promoter
  • HMRC has updated statutory maternity pay guidance to update information on how to deal with an employee working for another employer
  • HMRC has updated newly published business investment relief guidance to confirm investments made before 6 April 2017 will be treated under the old rules
  • HMRC has amended guidance on how to register a client’s trust to add information about recording details of more than two settlors
