Welcome to the Inclusive Book Club for Chartered Accountants Ireland members and students to meet and share their personal responses to books that open our minds to lives, beliefs and perspectives of others, often from different backgrounds, countries and social groups. This initiative of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee is designed to support inclusion, connection, and awareness through accessible discussion.

Reading and listening to books, to personal narratives, is a wonderful way into the minds of others, to understand their experiences and views. And such openness to and appreciation of difference underpins inclusivity and being inclusive. Books are, or course, also a trigger for wider conversations, and the sharing of experiences among their readers.

How it works

Book Club meetings are held online via Zoom. Meetings are at two-month intervals to allow time for reading. Each meeting has a facilitator, whose role is to start the discussion, keep it going, allowing all voices to be heard, while keeping the meeting on track and aligned with the Book Club’s Charter (see below). The name of the facilitator for each meeting is listed on this page, when known and available.

In terms of commitment, if you register for the Book Club, you can do not have to attend all meetings or read all books. You are welcome to join any meeting and discussion, and there is no expectation that you finish a book to discuss it.

When it happens

The Book Club meets online every two months on Fridays between 1–2 pm (GMT/BST), via Zoom on the Chartered Accountants Ireland account. The schedule for meetings in 2026 is as follows:

  • Friday 15 May
  • Friday 24 July
  • Friday 25 September
  • Friday 20 November

How to join

If you would like avail of this inclusive offer and join our Book Club, all you need to do is click the button below and register via Zoom, providing your full name and email address. You will then be sent by email meeting invites, calendar entries, reminders, notifications of any meeting date/time changes, any other changes or updates.

We also ask you to confirm if you are a member or student of Chartered Accountants Ireland, and to read and follow the Inclusive Book Club Charter, which is at the bottom of this page.

What books?

Initially, books are chosen by the facilitator, for example a member of the Institute’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, two months in advance and readers may choose which format suits them best: print, ebook, audiobook.

Once the Book Club is up and running, members can suggest ideas for next reads, with polls posed, votes taken, and so forth, allowing for consent and inclusivity.

The current book

Here is information about the book chosen by the Book Club to be discussed at its next meeting.

Poor by Katriona O'Sullivan

As the middle of five kids growing up in dire poverty, the odds were low on Katriona O'Sullivan making anything of her life. When she became a mother at 15 and ended up homeless, what followed were five years of barely coping.

This is the extraordinary story – moving, funny, brave, and sometimes startling – of how Katriona turned her life around. How the seeds of self-belief planted by teachers in childhood stayed with her. How she found mentors whose encouragement revitalised those seeds in adulthood, leading her to become an award-winning academic whose work challenges barriers to education.

Poor is not only Katriona's story, but is also her impassioned argument for the importance of looking out for our kids' futures. Of giving them hope, practical support and meaningful opportunities.

The inclusive book club charter

The Inclusive Book Club is for Chartered Accountants Ireland members and students. It a welcoming, respectful space and experience for all participants.

Inclusive Book Club members should:

  • Treat other members and participants with respect.
  • Support a psychologically safe space for informal discussion, allowing others to be heard, avoiding interruption and keeping contributions relevant to the book/topic.
  • Respect privacy: do not share other participants’ personal information or comments outside the meeting.
  • Participate in a way that works for them. Online camera/mic use is optional; the chat function may be preferred.
  • Help keep meetings accessible: speak clearly, avoid talking over others, and flag accessibility needs in advance where possible.
  • Look for sustainable ways to read books, for example using public or college libraries, ebooks, or pre-loved copies.

Contact for information and support

If you would like further information about the Inclusive Book Club, contact executive and/or technical support, or the facilitator, please email diversity@charteredaccountants.ie.
