Accessibility statement for eBooks
This accessibility statement outlines our commitment that eBooks published by Chartered Accountants Ireland are accessible to the widest possible audience. We prioritise compliance with accessibility standards and strive to continually improve the reading experience for all users.
While we do not sell eBooks directly on our website, we supply digital content for sale by third-party vendors, for example Amazon Kindle.
Our eBooks are also available on the Institute’s learning management system, Rhapsode.
Our commitment to accessibility
We are dedicated to making our eBooks usable and enjoyable for everyone. In compliance with the European Accessibility Act, eBooks published after 28 June 2025 will be as accessible as possible.
To achieve accessibility, we adhere to recognised accessibility guidelines, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, and the EPUB Accessibility 1.0 standard. These efforts ensure that our digital publications are inclusive, functional, and user-friendly.
Accessibility features
Our eBooks include a range of accessibility features.
Structured content
- Headings and subheadings are defined to create a logical reading order.
- Navigation aids such as a table of contents, page lists, and chapter markers ensure easy access to content.
Alternative text and long descriptions for images
- All meaningful images include descriptive alternative text or long descriptions to provide context.
- Decorative images are correctly marked as decorative, ensuring they are skipped by assistive technologies.
Read-aloud capabilities
- eBook content is compatible with most screen readers and text-to-speech software.
- Text reflow and resizing are supported for optimal readability.
Colour and contrast
- In most cases, text and background colours are chosen to meet contrast-ratio standards.
- Customisable display options allow users to adjust brightness, contrast, and font colours.
Technical compliance
Our eBooks are tested to ensure compatibility with a wide range of assistive technologies, including:
- A widely used screen reader (NVDA).
- Magnification tools.
- Keyboard-only navigation options.
We also validate our files using EPUB accessibility checkers and tools to ensure adherence to technical standards, and manually check the files.
Accessibility limitations
While we have made every effort to ensure full accessibility, there are some limitations. These are as follows:
- Some of the content we supply to our third-party vendors is fixed-format PDF only. We aim to have all such digital content converted to an accessible EPUB format by 2030.
- Some screenreaders have trouble reading out mathematical equations, accountancy formulae, and sometimes punctuation. We try to use MathML where possible.
- In some textbooks, we use €/£ to indicate currency, and screenreaders can have trouble understanding this.
- For some titles, colour contrast is not accessible.
Reader feedback
We value feedback from our readers. If you encounter any accessibility barriers or have suggestions for improvement, please contact us. Your insights are invaluable in helping us create a more inclusive reading experience.
