CAP2 Learning principles
CAP2 is informed by the following key documents:
- CAP2 competency statement - The competency statement is created by the examinations team and outlines the knowledge and skills examinable for the CAP2. A summary of changes to the CAP2 competency statement for 2025/26 is also provided by the team. Both documents will be available online within the Learning Hub.
- Summary of changes to the CAP2 Competency Statement
- Learning Journal - The learning journal is designed by the education team and the lecturers to help you map your study and we strongly recommend that you use it to guide your preparation and track your progress. The learning journal refers back to the competencies outlined in the competency statement. These will be available online within the Learning Hub and include the planning and delivery schedule for each subject.
- The cumulative principle (essential for anyone who has exemptions from CAP1) - Our education programme is based on cumulative knowledge which means there are key elements of CAP1 which are examined at a more advanced level at CAP2. Students who were exempt from CAP1, or students who progress from CAP1 into CAP2 will be expected to be fully conversant with material covered on the previous CAP1 syllabus and therefore should review the competency statement carefully in those subject areas, to check that they are familiar with the prescribed material.
- Guide to your training log - In addition to undertaking the professional education programme, a key element of the CA route to membership is maintaining and completing approved training log, which documents your relevant work experience. Further information on the training log can be found here. The log is monitored by the Training Support team and they can be contacted through the ‘Contact Us’ page or email trainingsupport@charteredaccountants.ie.
- The Professional Examination Committee (PEC) report which contains commentary on each year’s CAP2 exams. It serves as a formal reflection of previous exam performance and offer valuable advice to students sitting upcoming exams. The PEC reports can be found here.
- Lexicon - The lexicon is provided as a guide to students in managing requirements (whether explicit or implicit) on examination papers and other assessments. It contains a list of commonly used verbs or instructions, with their appropriate meaning.
Education delivery
For the academic year 2025/26 we are excited to introduce several new initiatives. As well as launching our improved and more user-friendly Learning Hub, all CAP2 subjects will be delivered in a new Adaptive Learning methodology.
What is Adaptive Learning?
Adaptive Learning is rapidly becoming recognised as the future of education delivery. It describes a data-driven, personalised and participative learning journey with you in the driving seat. High-impact, engaging content promises to bring you to the right content at a pace that suits you.
You choose your level of proficiency at the start, ten view learning content followed by rounds of probe questions that assess your recall and confidence in understanding at each stage. This combination of content and questions makes our new format genuinely interactive experience.
More information on how to engage with Adaptive Learning and how to use the functionality is available once you log into the Learning Hub. The education team encourages all students to embrace this new learning model to discover how it can benefit you.
The Learning Hub
The Learning Hub is your one-stop-shop for all Chartered Accountants Ireland student education provision, lectures, notes, webinars, discussion forums as well as important notifications and news updates. You’ll be receiving your link to the Learning Hub with details on how and where to log in. In the Induction section, you’ll learn where to access your recorded lectures and webinars, and how to navigate.
Each subject will be broken up into short learning ‘sessions’. Sessions are usually comprised of the following steps:
- A short introduction
- Lecture notes available to download
- Recorded online lectures, available to view where and when you choose
- Live webinars – please refer to your timetables
- Other components like question banks, polls, sample papers.
Webinars are the main time-bound education delivery items and they will be broadcast on early evenings and weekends, with duration of 120 mins.
In order to ensure a high-quality learning experience, please note that much of the content in sessions is ‘gated’. Some material will need to be viewed in sequence e.g. SFMA - Session 1 must be completed before starting on SFMA Session 2.
What you’ll see in The Learning Hub on day one
To be consistent with the principle of continuous and incremental improvement we’ll be releasing syllabus material on ongoing gradual basis. The learning materials will be released 10-14 days prior to each live webinar. At the start, students enrolled on Financial Reporting will see content only for this area, with more learning content posted each week.
Live webinars
Please refer to the timetables page to see webinar dates and times. You will be prompted to register for each live webinar on the Learning Hub. Students should attend live webinars at the scheduled time - recordings are intended for students who are genuinely unable to attend on the day. Attendance at live webinar is expected of all students.
Please note that the responsibility lies with the student to complete all the work required before webinars. Webinars have a particular purpose, for practical application of prior knowledge. Lecturers will not be going through the slide content and notes, so students must ensure they have completed the pre-work outlined in each session to avoid falling behind.
Attendance
Chartered Accountants Ireland facilitates the recording of attendance at lectures for training organisations. Webinar attendance is captured through registrations in the webinar platform. Students have to fill in their information including student number, training firm and email address linked to their student account. A report is then generated which shows if the student attended and engaged during the webinar.
Engagement with the self-study materials on the Learning Hub will also be reported on.
CAP2 timetables
The full 2025/26 timetables will be available soon to view and download here.
We do our best avoid any timetable changes, but they can happen due to unforeseen circumstances. If a change is required, we will send an e-mail to let you know so please ensure that both your mobile number and email details are correct on your student portal.
Exams
Main exams 2025/26 – E-Assessment
All exams in 2025/26 will be carried out using the same E-Assessment platform. The dates for exams and mocks are now available to view on the key dates page.
There is a full suite of information explaining the platform, how you’ll sit the exams, and a technology checklist to ensure your exam goes smoothly. Please take the time to read and view all the training material available on the E-Assessment information page.
Textbooks
For the 2025/26 academic year, we will contact you to advise of the book distribution process. All textbooks will be delivered to your registered home address. You can also access the e-books through your Learning Hub.
Book queries can be sent to: textbookqueries@charteredaccountants.ie. Please remember to include your student number in the subject line.
Data & privacy policies
Please note that in some cases student interaction may be recorded as part of our online delivery service. Our data policy, privacy settings and acceptable usage policy will all be outlined in our Course Information page which will be available on the Institute website shortly.
