Six questions in six minutes for Donal Bourke in Leeds

There may not be many miles between Cork and Leeds, but there was certainly a big jump from the family dairy farm to FinOps for Donal Bourke. We caught up with Donal recently to hear more about his career journey.     1. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?  I grew up on a dairy farm in Co. Cork about 30 minutes from Cork City. The majority of my family and extended family worked (and still work) in agriculture, but I have bad hayfever, and a sense of adventure took me to UCC to study commerce. 2. What made you choose to become a Chartered Accountant?  When I finished commerce, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do. The majority of my class were doing interviews with the big-4 accounting firms, and it seemed like the path of least resistance. So, I went along and managed to secure a job with KPMG in the transaction services department. You could imagine my surprise to learn that there was a qualification and exam expectations involved in the path I had chosen! However the firm provided great support and time off to ensure I completed my exams and became an ACA. 3. Can you tell us a little about how you got to where you are today – both the geographical relocation and career path. And, what advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Once I completed my qualification I went to Sydney, Australia (as the majority of my intake did at the time which was 2011). From there I’ve moved to Leeds, back to Cork and finally to Leeds again using my qualification to work in a wide array of industries. I've gone from spuds to drugs, when I moved from being Financial Controller for a potato plantation in South Australia to being a Revenue Reporting Analyst responsible for generating rebate invoices from harnessing millions of lines of generic drug sales data. I now find myself back in Leeds (my wife is from here, so "happy wife = happy life!"), where I have undergone another career pivot working in the field of FinOps for NetApp. This involves analysing customers' public cloud environment (outsourced opex IT spend). The third party providers have different commitment options available for purchasing their services and I am responsible to use the best instruments to deliver the highest savings. The advice I would give my 20-year-old self would be to never stop learning and looking for opportunities to evolve in your career. It was only after being made redundant from a previous role in 2019 that I took ownership of my career and what I wanted to do and I wish I’d done it sooner. 4. What do you value most about your membership of the profession, and how do you think those benefits can be used to support the economy and society? I value the transferability of the membership most. Whenever I have travelled, it automatically sets the bar for the type of roles I will be approached for. An ACA or FCA qualification means recruiters and employers know who they are getting. I think society can benefit from members having a more rounded experience and world view – personally and professionally. It is the unique experiences and mental connections we make which allow us to tackle problems in our own ways. With the pressing challenges of climate change and the uncertain nature of AI (artificial intelligence), our own rounded perspective is more important than ever. 5. As a member living away from Ireland, can you talk to us about how your membership has been of value to you within the UK, and what do you value about it now that you’re living there (and what would you like to see more of)?  I would love to see a more active district society and chartered community with networking opportunities outside of London. 6. What were the most significant/noticeable differences you encountered doing business and networking away from home and back in Ireland? Doing business, I’ve found no real differences between Ireland and the UK. My previous roles in Ireland were fully remote and I continue to work from home. One of the few good things to come out of Covid in my opinion.  In terms of networking, the biggest difference I’ve found is that I now have four small children, so the opportunities to network are limited but I look forward to building on that aspect once the kids become less of a handful. Institute marks Accounting Bodies Network (ABN) 15 year anniversary

But as the world changes due to macro sustainability trends such as climate change, biodiversity loss and inequality, more is needed. Gerard (Gerry) Nicholas 1953 – 2023

It is with great sadness that Chartered Accountants Ireland notes the death of Gerry Nicholas. Gerry was admitted to membership in 1979. He served on Council from 2010 until 2017 and was Chair of the London Society from its inception in 1999 until 2019.  During those 20 years, he put in enormous effort into developing the London District Society into the thriving group it is today. He was keenly involved in many of the London-based Irish charities and other Irish professional bodies, forging strong links.  As a result, he was widely known, liked and admired for his clear business mind, enthusiasm and friendship.  Gerry had a strong financial career in the banking industry spending more than 15 years with Bank of Ireland and later through his own companies in asset management, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and corporate finance.  Gerry will be remembered as a true collaborator, connector, and communicator, with a huge personality.  He will be sorely missed. We extend our deepest sympathies to Gerry's family and many friends and colleagues throughout London, Ireland and worldwide.

Chartered Accountant salaries remain strong, with notable increase in packages for newly qualified professionals

Wednesday 6 September 2023 – Earning potential for Chartered Accountants working in Leinster remains strong, with an average salary package this year of €118,578. The results of a new survey published today shows a notable increase in the average salary package of newly qualified Chartered Accountants, rising 6.6% to €62,866 compared to last year. The survey of approximately 1,000 Chartered Accountants, launched today by Chartered Accountants Ireland Leinster Society in partnership with Barden, Ireland’s leading accounting and tax talent advisory and recruitment firm, provides the most up-to-date guide to Chartered Accountant salaries and employment prospects in the Leinster region.   Strong remuneration packages The research, conducted by Coyne, shows earning potential across the profession remains strong, with €118,578 the average salary package for Chartered Accountants working across all sectors. This figure includes base salary, car or car allowance, and bonus. The remuneration package of members who qualified in the past two years increased by 6.6% from €58,967 in 2022 to €62,866 in 2023. Almost 9 in 10 (89%) of respondents overall say their total remuneration has increased in the past three years, compared to 86% in 2022. Two in five (39%) said their salary had increased by more than 25% this year. And four in five claim their total remuneration is expected to increase within the next 12 months. As part of the remuneration package, over 60% expect to receive a bonus in 2023.   The vast majority (87%) of members have a pension, with employers contributing an average 9% of their salary. After basic salary, this pension contribution is the most valued part of their package for 50% of respondents.      High job satisfaction and flexibility  Job satisfaction was high across all the metrics amongst those surveyed, with 76% of members satisfied with their work environment (73% in 2022); 68% happy with the salary they receive (62% in 2022); and 64% happy with work/life balance (unchanged on 2022). Half of respondents have been promoted in the last three years, with promotion highest amongst those working in practice at 77%.  Flexibility has become embedded as a feature of working life, with 75% of respondents employing a hybrid working model, up 2% on 2022. Only 1 in 10 respondents express concern that time spent working remotely will impact on their career progression. 7 in 10 value location flexibility, and over half of all members value flexibility in the shape of their working day (compressed hours, core hours, flexitime).  Automation and productivity The survey also shows the accounting profession is benefiting from technological advances, with 70% believing automation will have a positive impact on their career and almost half believing AI and big data will free up capacity to focus on higher-value parts of the job.  Des Gibney, Chairperson of Chartered Accountants Ireland Leinster Society, said:   “This year’s survey points to continued strong earning prospects for Chartered Accountants in Leinster. I’m particularly pleased to note the increase at the newly qualified level. This increase will play a crucial part in ensuring our profession remains attractive to the next generation – and will help us retain our top young talent in a very competitive market.   “I am also really pleased to see automation being so strongly embraced by respondents. Almost half agree that it will allow us to move further up the value chain in terms of the work that we do. This is already happening, with the work of Chartered Accountants transformed in recent years. It is really important that we communicate the breadth of opportunity in our profession to the next generation.”   Elaine Brady, Managing Partner at Barden, said: “Despite the backdrop of almost constant uncertainty over the past 12 months, the demand for accounting talent seen in 2022 continued almost unabated. Standing out from the crowd and attracting this much sought after talent is a key challenge for companies throughout Ireland. Accurate data on reward can create competitive advantage for those who choose to use it, especially in times such as these. These insights can also help businesses and hiring managers to craft competitive reward structures to aid talent retention and to understand what is required when looking to attract talent externally.  “It is also extremely interesting to see that 10% of members are working fully remotely, while 75% of members have hybrid working arrangements. Companies that mandate five days in the office have been, and will continue to be, at a significant competitive disadvantage when trying to attract accounting talent. Accounting bodies predict worsening of skills shortage problem

Strong employer demand and higher earning potential for accountants    Accounting bodies congratulate Leaving Cert class of 2023; welcome 27% increase in those taking accounting in last five years    Friday 25 August – The body representing professionally qualified accountants in Ireland has said it is vital that accountants remain on the government’s Critical Skills Occupations List. Its call comes as it responds to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment’s public consultation to review the eligibility of occupations on this list. The list is subject to regular review to ensure it reflects shortages of critical skills required for the proper functioning of the Irish economy. The Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies - Ireland (CCAB-I) is the representative committee for Chartered Accountants Ireland, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Its 43,500 members work across industry, professional practice, and the public sector. Commenting, Crona Clohisey, Tax & Public Policy Lead, Chartered Accountants Ireland said, “The accountancy profession plays a pivotal role in delivering professional services and advice to all sectors of the Irish economy, but presently most firms in which CCAB-I members operate have active vacancies that they are unable to fill. There is a critical shortage of accountants with audit experience; and a deficiency of accountants with practice experience of all types, including tax, data analytics, consultancy, and sustainability.  “The accountancy profession plays a pivotal role in delivering professional services and advice to all sectors of the Irish economy, but presently most firms in which CCAB-I members operate have active vacancies that they are unable to fill. There is a critical shortage of accountants with audit experience; and a deficiency of accountants with practice experience of all types, including tax, data analytics, consultancy, and sustainability.  “In the larger firms in particular, over half of new recruits filling vacant positions for experienced hires are currently being sourced from non-EEA countries due to a significant shortage of suitably qualified EEA-based candidates. Therefore, the inclusion of accountants on the Critical Skills Occupations List helps to meet ongoing capacity shortages.”  CCAB-I notes that the problem will be compounded by global trends and challenges. The Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive (CSRD) will bring all quoted and large companies (as defined) within scope of a new set of sustainability reporting and assurance requirements from 1 January 2024. In addition, Ireland is bidding to host the new European AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering Authority), and if successful, there will be a considerable demand for accountants with AML and Combatting Terrorist Financing (CTF) skills. Building the talent pipeline CCAB-I is engaged with the National Apprenticeships Office (NAO) on the potential creation of a new national professional accountancy apprenticeship to facilitate the entry of school leavers into the profession on an “earn and learn” basis. It is also liaising with the Department of Education on the reform of the outdated Leaving Certificate accounting syllabus as part of wider efforts to attract candidates into the profession.  There are 16,500 students studying to become accountants in businesses and firms around Ireland, and in addition to strong demand from employers, there is continued strong earning potential, with newly qualified Chartered Accountants receiving an average salary package of €58,967 in 2022. Commenting Brian Feighan, Chair of the CCAB-I Working Group on Leaving Certificate Syllabus Reform said;  “Looking at the results for Leaving Certificate Accounting, it is really encouraging to see a 27% increase in those taking the subject since 2018, and an increase in those taking higher level. But this increase in popularity at second level is not feeding through to sufficient take-up of places on accounting courses in third level and further education.  “We have long highlighted that students are being dissuaded from pursuing accounting as a career choice because of the outdated Leaving Certificate accounting syllabus. We are engaged with the Department of Education to prioritise the introduction of a new specification for Leaving Certificate Accounting which will better reflect the role of the accountant in today’s workplace.  “A huge amount of work is being done by the CCAB-I at second level to attract students into the profession. I would say to students receiving their exam results (and their parents), that employer demand for accountants is extremely strong. Salary levels for qualified accountants reflect this demand and the vitally important roles that accountants perform in all organisations. There have never been more ways to enter the profession, be it directly from school, or after third level. Revenue publishes guidance on 2022 ROS Form 11

Revenue has published a Tax and Duty Manual which highlights further changes to the 2022 income tax return (2022 ROS Form 11).  The changes include a workaround, advocated by CCAB-I, to enable the filing of the 2022 Form 11 where rental income is paid to non-resident landlords and there is no collection agent, or the tenant has not withheld tax from rent paid.  Other changes include pre-population of certain PSWT information, a new sub-panel to claim the rent tax credit as well as updates to the tax credits panel to reflect increased values, warning messages and some changes to the EII, SURE and SCI sub-panels. The 2022 ROS Form 11 has been available since 1 January 2023 but is updated on an ongoing basis to include additional prepopulated information from third parties.  Readers are reminded that there is no ROS offline version of the 2022 Form 11 but it can be prepared offline using the Return Preparation Facility (RPF). Further information is available in eBrief No.177/23.  Revenue’s Tax and Duty Manual – A Guide to Self-Assessment- has also been updated at paragraph 4 to reflect the available online payment options.

FRC launches consultation on revisions to Ethical Standard for auditors

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has launched a consultation on revisions to the Ethical Standard. The proposed revisions enhance prohibitions where an audit firm's independence could be threatened. There are also changes proposed to reflect findings from audit inspections and enforcement cases, as well as changes to reflect developments in the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) since the FRC last revised the standard in 2019. The consultation remains open until 31 October 2023.

Meeting with the Minister for Finance to discuss our Pre-Budget 2024 submission

Representatives from the Institute, under the auspices of the CCAB-I, met with the Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath T.D and his team earlier this week to discuss CCAB-I’s pre-Budget 2024 submission. The need to simplify the tax system and reduce the administrative burden on businesses was discussed, as were the complexities experienced by small businesses, in particular, when availing of several of the business tax reliefs. The importance of long-term investment in critical infrastructure, not least housing, in order to maintain Ireland’s position as a competitive place to do businesses and also to retain and attract talent was also highlighted.

Time to future proof the economy for next generation – accounting profession publishes Pre-Budget Submission

9 July 2023 – The success of future generations must be prioritised over short-term measures in Budget 2024, to ensure economic and societal progress in the decades to come. This is according to the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies-Ireland (CCAB-I), the umbrella group which represents over 50,000 professional accountants, as it published its Pre-Budget Submission today.   The submission, entitled ‘Supporting Ireland’s Transition to a Sustainable future’, prioritises the long-term, highlighting that while the Irish economy has doubled in size in the past decade, we still have significant shortfalls in healthcare, housing, transport infrastructure and education. Demographics are exacerbating these shortfalls.  The submission identifies two key areas for budgetary focus;  The introduction of an intermediate 30% rate of income tax to reduce the tax burden on younger workers; and Investment in housing capacity to accommodate our young workforce and our significant FDI community. Commenting, Tax and Public Policy Lead at Chartered Accountants Ireland, Cróna Clohisey said:  “In the absence of a long-term focus, we risk an intergenerational divide becoming a chasm. The half-year Exchequer returns of €41bn published this week highlight more than ever the difficult decisions government faces in Budget 2024. This sum represents an 11% increase on the same period last year, but it is now, when the Exchequer is relatively robust, that government should limit itself to modest budgetary tax adjustments and put real spending power behind sustained investment in infrastructure, particularly housing.  “Our economic position is strong, but it is not future-proofed. There is a real divide between generations in terms of access to housing, pensions security and many other indicators. We need Ireland to be a country our young people choose to stay in and that others choose to bring their skills to, but we cannot do that without long term, strategic interventions in transport, health, and housing.”  Reforming the income tax system  Ireland’s 40% tax rate is high in comparison to other competitor countries and the CCAB-I believes that introducing a third rate of income tax of 30% would make the system more equitable. It would also enhance Ireland’s attractiveness as a place to work, particularly among younger workers.   Ms Clohisey continues: “Workers in Ireland pay income tax at a rate of 40% once they earn €40,000. This entry point is below the average wage and is significantly lower than most countries across the UK and Europe where incidentally having more than two tax rates is extremely common.” “Speaking on behalf of a mobile profession where most are in the early stages of their careers and are planning their futures, introducing an intermediate 30% rate would make the system more attractive and more equitable, lessening the tax burden on workers and putting more money in their pockets. An intermediate rate would also support Ireland’s FDI offering. The government needs to take immediate action to address the inequities that clearly exist within the system.” The submission also proposes: Income tax credits and rate bands should be index-linked to earnings to account for inflation Employers’ PRSI should not be increased The rate of CGT and CAT should be reduced from 33% to 20% The CGT annual exempt amount should be increased from €1,270 to €5,000  The Category A threshold for CAT should be increased from €335,000 to €350,000  The CAT small gift exemption should be increased from €3,000 to €5,000. Housing measures The CCAB-I believes that small private landlords are critical in boosting Ireland’s housing supply, particularly in provincial towns where demand is not sufficient to justify large-scale investment in the private rental sector.  Ms Clohisey continues: “Our members tell us that one of the biggest barriers to expansion is the lack of adequate, affordable housing that is reasonably located for their staff. We do our young people an enormous disservice by limiting their opportunities to live and work where they want to.” “The tax burden of small private landlords should be the same as that for companies at the 25% rate, rather than at the marginal rate of 52%. On the supply side, to enable property developers to manage their cash-flow, a tax debt warehousing system, like that created during the pandemic, could be developed whereby the collection of taxes such as PAYE is delayed until all housing units have been sold.” The submission also proposes: Local property tax should be allowed as a deduction against rental income Wear and tear rates for fixture and fittings should be increased from 12.5% to 25% per annum to facilitate landlords investing in the maintenance of properties Where landlords retrofit a property to improve its energy rating, 100% capital allowances should be offered in the year of work ‘Rent-A-Room’ relief should be increased to match the standardised average rent and the ‘cliff-edge’ for qualifying for relief should be removed. Young Professionals Committee elects new chairperson Brendan Brophy

The Young Professionals Committee elected Brendan Brophy as the chairperson at the AGM on Thursday 6 July. Brendan was elected alongside Niamh McCarthy as Vice chair for the 2023 / 2024 term. We sat down with Brendan to learn more about him and his plans for the 2023 / 2024 term. While I am often referred to as the ‘Australian’ among my Irish friends, I personally identify as blend of Australian and Irish, and I am a proud dual citizen. My parents emigrated to Australia from Belfast during the height of the Troubles, meaning I have Irish and Australian citizenship, and I was raised with a deep appreciation and love for both cultures. I qualified as an Australian Chartered Accountant in 2016 through Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CAANZ). After gaining valuable experience as an accountant and tax professional in Australia, I decided to embark on a new journey and relocate to Dublin in mid-2017. I was able to obtain membership with Chartered Accountants Ireland through the reciprocal agreement between the two bodies. I had four years of valuable tax experience in Australia, but when I landed in Ireland, I quickly realised that Australian tax regulations and expertise was not as highly sought after in the local market. I subsequently transitioned into diverse financial management and reporting roles and currently work as a Cost Accountant at Square. Not long after my move to Dublin, I recall receiving an email from Chartered Accountants Ireland promoting an event organised by the Young Professionals Committee. Intrigued by the prospect of networking and connecting with fellow young professionals, I rallied a few of my co-workers to attend the event and the rest is history! Little did I know at the time that this would mark the beginning of my involvement with the committee. I am honoured to be elected as Chairperson of the Committee and look forward to a great year ahead. This year my primary goal is to prioritise the establishment and nurturing of meaningful connections. While attending exceptional events with notable speakers and engaging entertainment can be valuable, I believe the true significance lies in sharing those experiences with others. As young professionals, we play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between senior management and junior staff, fostering connections and collaboration within the organisation. Furthermore, it is essential to maintain a strong connection with the Institute and the great resources such as CA Support and Thrive that our available to all members. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Peter Gillen on a fantastic year as chairperson of the Young Professionals Committee. Special thanks to my fellow committee members, as well as Institute staff Karin Lanigan and Linda McGee who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support all our initiatives.  I look forward to the year ahead and hope that many young professionals will join us virtually and in person at our upcoming events. Five ways to wellbeing

The Five Ways to Wellbeing was developed by the New Economics Foundation in 2008, where their project collated research from around the world on proven actions that can help us feel good. Wellbeing is a term that has gained popularity in recent years but in its simplest form it is a state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy. In a broader sense, it’s how satisfied you are with life, your sense of purpose, and how in control you feel. The framework is used globally in various ways to build more awareness on our collective wellbeing and help people take action to improve it. Each action can make a positive impact in our lives and most of us will engage with these activities without being aware of it. To get the most from the five steps, it is important to incorporate all of them on a daily basis. Why not try the five today? Connect Social connection is extremely important for our wellbeing. We are social animals, and our need for connection can help us feel happier, increase our feelings of security and safety and gives us a greater sense of belonging and purpose. Make time to connect with others each day. Nurture and invest in your relationships with loved ones.  This could be talking to someone rather than sending an email, speaking to someone new - possibly chatting to another in your local coffee shop or supermarket or taking time out to ask a loved one how they are truly feeling. Be Active Look for ways to be active each day. This doesn’t mean spending hours in the gym though; find an activity you can enjoy and try to incorporate it into your everyday life. Physical activity is intrinsically linked with lower rates of depression and anxiety. Why not take the stairs rather than the lift, go for a walk at lunch, or explore your local park – little changes can reap huge rewards. Take Notice Simply put, be in the moment. Being aware of the now can help you feel calmer and reduce stress. Take stock of what is around you and paying attention to the present – to your own thoughts, feelings and to the world around you. Keep Learning Be curious and ever learning! Continuing to learn throughout life can help boost our self-confidence and self-esteem. As adults, we can be time poor with other day-to-day responsibilities but simple activities such as learning a new recipe, getting around to that DIY project, doing a puzzle or setting yourself a new challenge can help achieve a higher level of wellbeing. Give Giving to others makes us feel good. When we give or help others, it activates parts of the brain associated with trust, social connection and pleasure. It provides a sense of meaning, improves our life satisfaction and mood, and can even reduce stress. Giving up your time to others can also help strengthen relationships or build new ones. Try to complete a small act of kindness today. Research into actions for improving happiness has shown that committing an act of kindness once a week over a six-week period is associated with an increase in wellbeing. How to embrace short-notice presentations

Paul A. Slattery outlines the keys to successful impromptu public speaking. Ad hoc speaking situations are a common occurrence in professional settings, and the mere prospect of delivering a speech at short notice can be nerve-racking for many of us. However, there is no need to dread this. By employing specific techniques, you can deliver a successful presentation at any time. Be prepared to sound spontaneous Your goal is to sound spontaneous while articulating your ideas in an organised manner, making an impact on your audience. Although being fresh and spontaneous is desirable, simply ‘winging it’ should never be your approach. Achieving a balance of ‘organised improvisation’ and appearing natural without following a script requires preparation. The rule of three The ‘Rule of Three’ is an excellent starting point. It can be adapted to suit any topic and is based on the concept that we are more likely to remember a list of three items or ideas. You can use the Rule of Three to structure your presentation and deliver a solid argument, even with barely any time to prepare. Select the three most important aspects to concentrate on, such as “Three necessary measures to undertake….” The Rule of Three is exemplified in another recommended communication model: ‘Be Brief. Be Bright. Be Gone.’ This philosophy was introduced by Jay Frost and David Currier in their book of the same name. The idea was originally intended for aspiring pharmaceutical sales representatives, but it can be universally applied. To succeed in sales, it is essential to comprehend and implement these three principles: Be brief — Keep your sales pitches short and to the point. Be bright — Understand your product and its context. Be gone — Respect your customer’s time. Be brief Keep in mind that simplicity is key to effective communication. Start by defining the reason for the presentation and providing the relevant facts. Tell your audience only what they need to know – not everything you know. Be ready to answer their questions and maintain a positive attitude in your communication. Consider using the BLUF methodology. BLUF stands for Bottom Line Up Front and is a concise communication practice in which critical information is presented first. It is commonly used in the US military to ensure precision and impact. Think of BLUF as an inverted pyramid providing a simplified version of the message. It is applicable not only in military writing and journalism but also in business presentations. Be bright As a starting point, understand your situation and its context. You should also aim to create a bright impression by engaging in eye contact and, when feasible, firmly shake hands. Try maintaining a confident posture by standing tall. Make sure to convey openness and receptiveness by uncrossing your arms and legs. A sincere smile can go a long way in creating a connection. When speaking, project your voice into the room to ensure everyone can hear you clearly. Speak with confidence to convey your expertise and captivate your listeners. In other words, project your executive presence. Be gone Once you have conveyed your message, it is important to conclude promptly, respecting people’s time and avoiding unnecessary follow-up. Showing consideration for others’ schedules and minimising complexity are vital in any professional communication. There is no need to dread presenting at short notice. Being ready will assist you in delivering concise and compelling presentations. By practising the approaches mentioned here, you can deliver successful impromptu speeches, sound spontaneous and leave a lasting impression on your audience. Paul A. How to understand Gen Z in the workplace

How do employers attract and retain Gen Z? Full-blown member David Boyd explains The oldest members of Gen Z are now 26, only a few years out of university, an experience shaped by an abrupt shift to online learning, disrupted exams and prohibited socialising. Then the introduction of remote work put individuals’ priorities into perspective. So what does this mean for Gen Z in the workforce? Great Place to Work identified that Gen Z are the largest generation, 32 percent of the global population. By the year 2030, the number of Gen Z employees is anticipated to triple. While they are educated, skilled, socially conscious and resilient, their full potential is as yet unknown. Having grown up with evolving technology, they are more adaptable to change and accepting of efficiencies at work. Additionally, Gen Z want to work for an organisation that sees them as an individual, not a number. As this generation loves learning and puts diversity and inclusion first, a company’s culture can be their first non-negotiable factor in applying for a job. Forget the generalisation that all of Gen Z are “quiet quitters” because what they really want is transparency, action on diversity, and social and environmental responsibility from an organisation that will support their career development. Generation X and Millennial employers should be mindful of Gen Z’s use of anonymous review websites and social media platforms to assess organisational culture. Therefore, organisations should consider if their digital platforms feature people from diverse backgrounds and show support for LGBTQ+ communities, and their online presence is authentic, showcasing their values. Gen Z are said to be the most selective generation, who will change jobs and employers for better opportunities and value alignment. They pay close attention to the types of interview questions asked, particularly if the interviewer is empathetic towards their happiness in the role and good cultural fit. Some people hold the misconception that what Gen Z want at work is a Google-style lounge area and activities but what they really want is holistic benefits, particularly flexibility. Gen Z have experienced working remotely and so are keen to optimise their time outside work to meet their commitments and achieve ambitions. They are unwilling to compromise their vision to fit into a culture that does not fulfil their expectation to live outside working hours. Of course, flexibility includes more than just flexible working hours; it means internal mobility through acquiring a new skill or role. It is unlikely that Gen Z will settle in one role for the duration of their career without the opportunity for growth and development. A study by LinkedIn found that 40 percent of Gen Z are willing to accept a pay cut for a role that offers better career development. A further 70 percent had experienced a career awakening, initiated by the pandemic. Symptoms included boredom, a craving for more work-life-balance and the desire for a job aligned with their passions. Organisations that strive to attract and retain Gen Z should commit to making a strong initial connection with employees, utilise technology for efficiencies, take action on social and environmental global issues, and provide support for employees’ personal and career development. Barden enters new agreement to support the Chartered Accountants Ireland Young Professionals group

Demand for early career accountants has increased by 20% in the last 12 months, according to new data released by specialist accounting talent advisory and recruitment firm Barden. Defined as accountants with 3-5 years post-qualification experience (PQE), the demand for early career accountants is being driven by finance teams restructuring and reshaping themselves for the future. At present, finance managers, finance business partners and senior financial accountants are amongst the most sought-after talent in organisations big and small. Practical accounting skills remain important but increasingly CFOs are prioritising candidates with people skills; such as the ability to influence others, to lead others, to lead change programmes, and the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial people. Elaine Brady, Managing Partner, Barden Leinster said “It has been widely reported in recent months that greater attention needs to be devoted to the development of softer skills, the sorts of skills that early career professionals have not had the opportunity to develop as effectively during COVID. We are seeing this on the ground, and increasingly it is these core skills that differentiate who is promoted/hired and who is not.” This increased demand contrasts with a similar decline in available talent driven by two key factors. The first of these is a significant uptick in the number of early career professionals relocating overseas/travelling post-pandemic, with the duration of their stays extending well beyond the traditional 12–18-month mark. The second factor is a divergence in the opportunities available for accountants at this early career level as firms diversify their service lines and finance project and transformation opportunities increase in frequency. These findings come as Barden announces a new three-year agreement to support the Chartered Accountants Ireland Young Professionals group. The partnership will ensure those a few years into their careers as chartered accountants have access to the most up to date marketplace intelligence and expertise they need, awareness of future trends and opportunities as they come down the tracks, and what these mean for their career. Commenting, Sinead Donovan, President of Chartered Accountants Ireland said “Today’s announcement represents a significant enhancement of the supports available to early career accountants. Supporting the next generation as they enter the profession and build their careers was my priority when I became President. When we see a 20% increase in demand for talent coupled with a decline in available talent, it’s clear that there is something amiss. “Part of this is better communicating exactly what we do in our profession. It is not just the traditional accounting skills anymore, it is the people skills, the non-financial reporting expertise and so much more. Our annual student recruitment campaign, underway at the moment, very much reflects this focus. Lord Mayor of Dublin launches business led Green Pearse Street campaign

96% of respondents see the need for change, with more greenery and social space the most popular wishes   Objective to create biodiverse, inclusive, green space that benefits local communities, businesses, and visitors    The Lord Mayor of Dublin has today officially launched the Green Pearse Street campaign. Green Pearse Street comprises a diverse group of local businesses and organisations on and near Pearse Street, one of Dublin’s longest streets, stretching from Ringsend to College Green.  The objective of the new campaign is to ‘green’ the street, improve the air quality, create a health and biodiversity corridor, and more social space for people. The campaign launch coincides with EU Green Week which began over the weekend. Members of Green Pearse Street include All Human, Bread41, Chartered Accountants Ireland, Cloud Picker Coffee, Dublin Chamber, Grant Thornton, The Podcast Studios, Henry J Lyons, Honey Truffle, Iput, Jobcare, O'Neills Victorian Pub and Townhouse, Pearse Street Management, PLM Group, St Andrews Resource Centre, The Lombard Pub & Townhouse Accommodation, Trinity College Dublin, and William Fry, with more businesses expected to join in the months to come.   Green Pearse Street surveyed over 750 respondents to generate insights. 96% of those approached on the street identified a need for change (of some variety, ranging from small to larger scale). Only 6% rated the current street layout as very good or excellent, with 24% rating it as poor. Popular recommendations on changes to the street include addition of more greenery (91%) more social spaces (benches and tables) (77%), and a safe cycle lane (64%).    As one of the main arteries in the city, Pearse Street regularly records elevated levels of harmful pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO²) and particulate matter (PM 2.5). According to EU research air pollution is the largest environmental health risk in Europe, causing chronic illness and premature deaths, particularly in urban areas.   Working in two parallel streams, the Green Pearse Street campaign includes action at individual organisation level, and on the collective level to create street-wide change for businesses, local communities, tourists, and other street users. Coordinated work by businesses along the street has already commenced with measures including planters at ground and roof/balcony level to provide food for pollinating insects; the construction of living walls/green roofs; the installation of bird boxes/feeders to provide space for nesting and foraging; and a programme of local community engagement.    In the longer-term, the group will campaign for the optimisation of this significant streetscape to make greater provision for Dubliners and visitors to the city to stop and enjoy the surroundings.  Lord Mayor of Dublin, Caroline Conroy said “I am delighted to launch this exciting initiative bringing together local businesses and communities on Pearse Street. This street is more than a traffic thoroughfare. It’s a home, it’s a community, it’s a place where people study, work and meet others.  “The benefits of greening have been demonstrated in other jurisdictions, and include space for urban wildlife to flourish, reductions in air pollution, physical health benefits from increased active travel, and enhanced mental health because of greater connectivity amongst street users. This campaign is an opportunity for the businesses and local organisations of Pearse Street to contribute to making the street a vibrant, welcoming, and exciting space for people to enjoy, and I look forward to following its progress.”  Susan Rossney, Sustainability Officer, Chartered Accountants Ireland, said “Reimaging Pearse Street is at the heart of this campaign. Trees and planters, repair works to the street surface, street furniture, seating near bus stops, space for active travel (walking, cycling) and for people with disabilities will transform our street. A greener street would also enhance the experience of street users, by introducing space for eating and drinking, street art such as sculptures and murals, and starting to signpost and further open up the cultural and historical gems dotted right along the street and waiting to be explored. “More than ever, businesses need to satisfy the ESG requirements of stakeholders, like investors, regulators, consumers, clients, and staff, but it can be hard to know where to start. By banding together, the Green Pearse Street partners can share advice on organisation-level activities, but also build a strong collective voice to campaign for the Pearse Street they want in the future. It’s a way of taking action under the environmental and social ‘pillars’ of ESG, on which many businesses will soon need to report.” ENDS

Professor Patricia Barker recipient of Outstanding Contribution to Accountancy award

Professor Patricia Barker has been recognised for her contribution to the accountancy profession. She received the “Outstanding Contribution to Accountancy” award at the 2023 Irish Accountancy Awards in Dublin. Professor Barker sat her accounting exams 50 years ago this year, becoming only the 20th female chartered accountant in Ireland in 1973. The Outstanding Contribution category recognises an individual whose work demonstrates a sustained commitment to the advancement of the profession. It recognises the exceptional abilities and achievements of Professor Barker, as well as her commitment to the organisations and teams she has worked with, and to the industry overall. Previous recipients of the award include Elaine Coughlan, FCA, Dr Laurence Crowley, CBE, FCA and Dr Margaret Downes FCA.   Chief Executive of Chartered Accountants Ireland, Barry Dempsey said  “Patricia Barker has devoted decades of service to the advancement of the chartered accountancy profession in Ireland, and around the world, and the Institute was fortunate to have her expertise on Council for almost a decade. She played an integral role in the advancement of education in accounting and finance over many years. At a time when it is more critical than ever that we attract a new generation of students into the profession, we have a renewed appreciation of the importance of her work. “The extent of her engagement beyond the profession however, on such a variety of boards and international bodies, is an outstanding embodiment of the role that Chartered Accountants can and should play in society. Her devotion to fostering higher ethical standards, greater equality and protecting basic human rights is a source of enormous pride for all of us who have had the pleasure of working alongside her at different junctures.” Accepting the award, Professor Barker said “It’s such an honour to accept this recognition. Our profession opened up to women in 1918, and it’s encouraging to see women now making up 50% of our numbers. It’s so important for women to act as mentors to other women entering the profession. “There is so much opportunity in the modern profession beyond the conventional accounting roles, and I would encourage chartered accountants to entertain opportunities to expand their careers, even it seems risky.  The sense of anxiety that accompanies these opportunities should also be embraced and balanced by a set of personally developed ethical values.” The Irish Accountancy Awards were launched in 2016 to celebrate excellence in the accountancy profession across a total of 27 categories.

New Chartered Accountants Ireland president Sinead Donovan vows to bridge gap to Next Generation accountants

Next Gen must be able to see themselves in our profession’ – Donovan   Demand for improved work-life balance remains and needs to be tackled – Donovan  New President takes office 37 years after late father, Cecil Donovan assumed same position 19 May 2023 – The newly elected President of Chartered Accountants Ireland has today highlighted the significant perception gap that exists among Gen Z considering accountancy as a career path.  Sinead Donovan, Chair of Grant Thornton Ireland and Partner in its Financial Accounting and Advisory Services practice has made positioning the profession to attract the next generation the key objective of her one-year term.   The AGM of Chartered Accountants Ireland, the longest-established professional accountancy body on the island of Ireland took place in Dublin today.  The new President takes office 37 years after her late father, Cecil Donovan and the Institute now has over 31,700 members in over 100 countries, and 7,000 students. Donovan cited new Chartered Accountant Ireland research, conducted under the auspices of Chartered Accountants Worldwide among Gen Z respondents in Ireland and around the world, to emphasise this perception gap among Gen Z.  The study aimed to find out how the qualification is perceived by this cohort, in the context of skills shortages affecting the accounting profession, and many other professions globally.  The survey results showed a significant perception gap between those surveyed who had no experience /engagement with chartered accountancy, compared to those who had commenced their training.  Respondents from Ireland reported seeing chartered accountancy as challenging (56%), numbers-based (34%) and boring (19%). They were considerably less likely than the global average to view the profession as purpose-led (2%), creative (0%) or exciting (4%). Encouragingly however, once they started their chartered accountancy training, Irish respondents were far more likely to view it as varied (increased from 8% to 25%) and purpose-led, and those describing it as “boring” halved.    Donovan noted,  “It’s clear that once students commence their training, they get a much better sense of what the qualification is about, but for those who haven’t made the decision yet, the perception gap is pretty stark.  Irish students recorded a significant difference in perception, which shows us there is work to do.  Engaging the next generation of accountants and the next generation of leaders will be front of mind for the Institute this year.” Routes into the profession There are more routes into the profession today than ever before, but Donovan reflected on what now needs to be done to promote the qualification to the next generation, including changing the established and accepted ways of doing things.  She said, “If the next generation does not buy into what we do and see itself in our profession, it will be because we are not adequately selling it to them, whether at school or third level, or in the early stages of their professional training. I want to ensure that students understand what ACA is and what the benefits of entering the profession are. Gone are the days of calculators and ledgers – our focus now is on technology; data analytics; leadership skills and global developments. Being an Irish Chartered Accountant is respected around the globe and the qualification enables truly global travel and ability to do business.  “There has been a lot of attention in public discourse about the need to step up post pandemic and help students and new recruits adapt to the working environment.  I firmly believe there is also a need for us to re-examine that status quo and use this opportunity to ensure the environment is one that works for the next generation of the profession too.  Those at the start of their careers are seeking a greater degree of flexibility and better work-life balance.  Our profession is in the middle of a recruitment and retention challenge and if we don’t step up to harness this talent pool, we are missing out.”
