Purpose of the Role
The Head of the Finance Committee provides strategic financial leadership, ensuring the charity’s resources are managed responsibly, transparently, and in compliance with Irish charity law and best governance practices. This role requires financial expertise, strategic oversight, and a commitment to improving the lives of people affected by multiple myeloma in Ireland, while adhering to Irish regulatory requirements, including those set by the Charities Regulator.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Oversight
• Lead the Finance Committee in monitoring the financial health of the organisation.
• Ensure robust financial controls, policies, and procedures are in place and regularly reviewed.
• Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate, timely financial reports to the Board.
• Review management accounts, budgets, cash flow forecasts, and financial statements.
2. Budgeting and Planning
• Work with the Finance Committee to develop annual budgets aligned with the charity’s strategic objectives.
• Present the annual budget to the Board for approval and monitor actual performance against budget throughout the year.
3. Compliance and Risk Management
• Ensure compliance with all statutory financial and reporting requirements, including the Charities Regulator and Revenue Commissioners.
• Support the preparation and filing of the annual audited financial statements.
• Oversee risk management in relation to financial matters and advise the Board accordingly.
4. External Relationships
• Act as the principal liaison with external auditors, accountants, bookkeeper, and relevant financial advisors.
• Represent the organisation in financial discussions with funders or regulators as needed.
5. Governance and Board Contribution
• Advise the Board on financial implications of strategic and operational plans.
• Present financial information clearly and accessibly to Board members who may not have a financial background.
• Ensure all Board members are equipped to understand financial reports and make informed financial decisions.
6. Committee Leadership
• Convene and chair Finance Committee meetings, setting agendas in consultation with the Chairperson and vice-Chairperson of MMI.
• Ensure minutes and actions are recorded and followed up.
• Support and mentor other committee members to fulfil their roles effectively.
Time Commitment
Estimated commitment: [e.g., 6–8 Board and Committee meetings per year plus preparation time and occasional additional meetings as needed].
Note: This is a voluntary role; reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed in line with Multiple Myeloma Ireland’s policies.
