Programme overview

Chartered Accountants Ireland, following extensive engagement with key stakeholders in the Irish Public Sector has created the Certificate in Public Sector Accounting. This certificate will support those involved in the implementation, management, and oversight of the new Central Government Accounting Standards (CGAS).

As part of the Central Government Financial Reporting Reform, the first Central Government Accounting Standards (CGAS) came into effect for accounting periods commencing on or after January 1, 2024, for all Government Departments and Offices of Government.

This programme is designed to provide an understanding of the above standards and offer an invaluable technical update for finance professionals working in the public sector. Participants will gain updated knowledge and practical skills in financial accounting, enhancing their contribution to financial decision-making processes in their organisation and boosting their career development potential.

Entry requirements

This programme has been designed to meet the needs of professionals working in or supporting the Irish Public Sector and who require an understanding of the GCAS Standards, and is open to:

• Those in finance or finance related roles in the Public Sector at all levels
• Members of Chartered Accountants other Accountants and other professionals who may support or provide services to the Irish Public Sector

Programme fees

Fees are fully-inclusive and will cover: registration, course materials, tuition fees and exam fees.

How you study

Delivery will be a mix of online (live and recorded content) and in-person sessions (in Chartered Accountants House, Dublin 2), offering participants flexibility and networking opportunities. Session 1 of each module will release recorded/on-demand content to be completed before attending Session 2, which will be delivered live.. 

Assessment

The course will be assessed through a mix of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and a final case study-based assignment. The MCQs will account for 40% of the overall marks

CPD hours

This programme offers structured and unstructured CPD hours contact time. The exact number of hours that can be claimed as CPD will vary for each individual depending on time expended and the requirements of their professional body.
