Exam preparation

Exam technique & time management preparation

In advance of students sitting their on-demand exams, interim assessments and main exams, students will be provided with access to sample papers, practice papers and PEC & FAEC reports. Students can practice their exam technique and time management for all exams. This allows students to become familiar with the question formats and the exam platform before sitting their exams. The exam preparation resources are not invigilated or marked.

Exam location guidance

Students must ensure the location selected for their exam is a quiet, well-lit room and away from other people. The exam must be taken on a desk or a table. Once a student has entered the exam, they are not permitted to change location for any reason.

Unpermitted exam locations

  • Public areas with other individuals like libraries, internet cafes, coffee shops
  • Outdoors
  • Bathroom/restroom
  • Bed
  • Sofa
  • Automobile
  • A room with clear glass walls

Practice onboarding session

The practice onboarding session is for students to become familiar with the onboarding process prior to sitting the main Summer exams. This will be held on a particular day and students will be allocated a time slot to complete their practice onboarding session. The practice onboarding session should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete. Students will not be permitted to change their allocated time slot. The relevant exam executive will email students their exam link prior to the practice onboarding day.

Permitted forms of identification

All name(s) on the valid photo ID must match exactly with the name(s) the student has registered with Chartered Accountants Ireland. The ID must be valid and in date.

On the exam day, if a student presents an expired Passport, Drivers Licence or Government issued identification or  non-permitted identification, this will be reviewed after and the exam result maybe forfeited. In this case, the student will have to purchase a resit exam and reschedule for on-demand exams only (CAP1 DEBK and CAP1 Law). For main exam sittings, the student should contact the relevant exam executive. During the onboarding phase, if a student fails to take a valid picture of their ID, when prompted to do so, this will  result in a review of their exam and a possible forfeit of their exam result.

Checklists for exam day

Review the two checklists below before exam day.

PREPARING FOR EXAM DAY - GUARDIAN BROWSER
ON EXAM DAY - GUARDIAN BROWSER

Exam day onboarding process

The onboarding process for the exam will not affect the students examination time. ProctorU reservations remain active in the students account for 15 minutes past the scheduled time. If they have exceeded the 15 minute window, the student will not be able to sit the exam. If this is an on-demand exam, the student will have to re-schedule their exam. For main exam sittings, the student should contact the relevant exam executive. If the student fails to show for an exam session, this will be counted as an attempt.

How to reconnect to an exam

If a student gets disconnected from their exam, they will need to close the Guardian Browser. Students must ensure that all windows are closed out properly.  Once your internet connection is back / fixed, the student will have to log back into their student portal, using the Guardian Browser, to ‘My Enrolments’ and click the exam link they are currently sitting. This will bring the student back to the ProctorU homepage and they will see a ‘Reconnect’ button. Upon clicking ‘Reconnect’ the students will need to go through the onboarding process again before being redirected to their exam in Cirrus.

How to conduct a room scan

Students may be directly messaged and requested to do a scan of their workspace/exam environment by the invigilator at any stage during the exam. Students must comply with this request at once and follow all instructions given to them by the invigilator.
Review the 'How to conduct a room scan' PDF prior to exam day.

Technical & exam day support

If students encounter any technical difficulties while testing their equipment or on exam day, they can access ProctorU technical support.

If a student experiences technical difficulty during an exam, the online invigilator or exam executive may contact the student by phone. Students are permitted to have their mobile phone in the exam room; however, this must be placed away from their desk and kept on silent/vibrate. Students must ensure that their contact details are up-to date on their student portal as this contact number will be required.
